I have Shaver/Shafer/Shaffer family ancestors in PA dating from at least about 1750. My own direct line moved from PA to Ohio in around 1800 but left others in PA whom I've not yet been able to identify. Perhaps there is a connection which, if made, will allow you to extend your line further backwards. Below is a listing (more than may be necessary for this purpose) of four generations, as I presently know them, of decendants of George Shaver from PA, mid 1700's. Hope we can make some connection.

Dr. Shafer, b. 10/12/1852 in Washington Court House, OH, was the son of David & Sarah Shafer. He had 8 brothers and sisters. The family moved to Marshall Co., IN in 1865. Dr. Shafer founded the Rochester College and the Woodlawn Hospital in Rochester, IN (Fulton Co.).

OK, now for my bad news--he is not the Windfield S. Shafer I was look- ing for. Born 5 years apart, both in OH, to different, unrelated Shafer families, what are the chances?! Well, it happened. Therefore, if this family belongs to you, let me know. I am terminating my research, but you are welcome to the material I have collected.

Children: James W. b 1846/47

John M. b 18 Jan 1848

Frederick b 1849/50 all born in Indiana

Moved to Palmyra,Warren Co (near Des Moines) Iowa by 1864 when James & John (lied about his age) enlisted in the Union Army. John moved to Jasper Co, MO in 1867, but returned to IA in 1880s, so think some of the family remained there.

Subject: Jacob

From: = lisa.peppan@prostar.com

I have heard family stories about a Jacob Schaeffer (the spelling, of course, is a quirky thing at best, I've got four). I've been told he fought a duel with his superior officer whilst attached to the Prussian army. He won but felt his odds for continued survival would improve drastically with a change of address, so he came to the, then, 13 colonies and wound up fighting with the Revolutionaries. The problem with this story is that Jacob's son, George Phillip Schaffer (the spelling my great aunts--2 of the 4 granddaughters George had--both agree upon, adding that it was George who "simplified" the spelling of Schaeffer by dropping the "e") died in 1919 at no extraordinarily great age. Of course this does leave the door open for my Jacob having had a father named Jacob. Anyway. . .

1. Jacob SCHAEFFER born 1850* married 1865* in the United States* sp. Nancy Hanawalt born 1850+/-*

2. George Phillip Schaffer born after/around 1865* in Pennsylvania* married 1880* died 1919 Tacoma, Washington buried Old Tacoma Cemetery. The great aunts--same as mentioned above--think that George was either a mule skinner or a sheriff in/at Fort Randall when South Dakota was a part of the Dakota Territory, where all 5 of his children were born. sp. Mary Louise MILLER born 1866* in the United States* died 1888 Fort Randall, Dakota Terr. (child birth/disease) buried Fort Randall, South Dakota

3. Frederick Schaffer born 1880* Fort Randal, Dakota Terr. died 1902--age 22 buried Old Tacoma Cemetary

3. Mable Louise Schaffer born 17May1883 Fort Randall, Dakota Terr. (my great grandmother) married 1Nov1899 Tacoma, Washington died 13 June 1953 Seattle, Washington cremated and interred at Evergreen/ Washelli Crematorium Seattle, Wa. sp. William John STUCKEY born 2 Jan1877 Bristol England (my great grandfather) died 28Dec1956 Seattle Wa. interred with wife.

3. Miles Schaffer born 1885* Fort Randall, Dakota Terr. died 1904 Washington--age 19 gun shot in a hunting accident buried Old Tacoma Cemetary

3. Alicia Schaffer born before 1884*

3. James Schaffer born ?

The great aunts--daughters of Mable Louise Schaffer--said that their grandmother, Mary Louise, "was buried on the same reservation as Sitting Bull is buried on". When I pressed for more information, they changed the subject and refused to let me change it back. An inadequate income has prevented me from doing much research other than locally, which is why there's so much Washington state info.

I really don't know where my Shaffer folk came from; the great aunts say they were "Pennsylvannia Dutch", their brother says the Shaffer family came from Prussia--both offer several different spelling for Shaffer.

From: mbshafer@telerama.lm.com (Michael Shafer)

Subject: SHAFER, John, Northampton Co. PA, 1801

Updates regarding information I have on my g-g-gf, John SHAFER.

1. There was some question regarding the county of his birth as it was stated as Schuylkill County, PA by one of his son's in a brief biography he did after his father's death in 1883. The area did indeed become part of Schuylkill County in 1811 when that county was formed but was not so at the time of his birth May 15, 1801. The question was as to whether it was part of either Berks or Northampton prior to the formation of Schuylkill. Researching the PA Census for 1810 reveals that it was indeed a small township in the western section of Northampton County, PA.

2. The 1810 census index identifies a Jacob SHAFER as living in Lynn Township which is the next township east of West Penn. This is incorrect. Review of the microfilms of the actual census data reveals that the West Penn data is small (about 40 names) and is on the same page as the end of the Lynn Township data. Easily confused as apparently happened.

3. The Jacob SHAFER listed in West Penn Township, Northampton County, PA for the 1810 census fits the profile. The data shows one male under age 10 (my g-g-gf would have been 9) and one male of age range 16-26 and one female of age range 16-26 and one female of age range 45+. I feel strongly that this is my g-g-g-gf's household. I assume that the female at 45+ was either Jacob's mother or his mother-in-law.

4. The 1820 PA Census shows a Jacob SHAFER in West Penn Township of now Schuylkill County, PA that fairly fits the evolving profile. There is the addition of several more children but it now shows a male of age 16-25 (my g-g-gf John SHAFER would now be 19) and a female of the appropriate age range for his mother. Age range for Jacob is problematic unless he figured some way to age 20 years in 10 :_). I suspect that the original data may have been wrong and Jacob was actually in the next age range which in the 1810 census would have been the range of 26-45. If this is the case then the 1820 census data reasonably supports that this is the same Jacob SHAFER.

Extrapolating from this I am confident that Jacob SHAFER is my g-g-g-gf. Working from time period for the census and age ranges he was born sometime between approximately 1774 and 1784 and his wife was born circa 1784.

Looking for connections to:

Jacob SHAFER b. circa 1774-1784

Lived in West Penn Twp. of Northampton County, PA from time period of at least 1800 to 1820.

Children

John SHAFER b. May 15, 1801

1820 Census data indicates 3 male children under 10.

1820 Census data indicates one male child 10-15

1820 Census data indicates 2 female children 10-15.

1820 Census data indicates 1 female child age 16-25.
