                       Descendant Report for
                            John VASSALL

VASSALL, John, Born in England or France?; John sent his son John to
England during the religious troubles in France from his home in
 Normandy.--(Dict. of Nat. Biography, Vol. XX. 1938, p. 155).
  1 VASSALL, John, Born ??? 1570? in England, Died ??? 1625 at age 55;
In Holmes (1974) William Vassall is the son of John Vassall.
(Page 247) This John Vassall was probably a religious refugee
from France, and position and security in England, fitted out and
commanded two ships against the Spanish Armada, and was later a
member of the Virginia Company.--(Dictionary of American
Biography, Vol.19, p.230) John was an alderman of London, who, in
1588, at his own expense, fitted out and commanded two chips of
war with which he joined the royal navy to oppose the Spanish
Armada.--(NEH&GR, Jan 1871, p.39.) He describes himself in his
will as a mariner, of French extraction. His father John sent
him to England during the religious troubles in France from his
home in Normandy. He seems to have been recognized as an
authority in questions of navigation, as we find him recommended
to be examined by the judge of admiralty as to the skill of the
pilot in a suit respecting the wreck of a vessel on the Goodwin
sands in 1577. In 1588 he fitted out & commanded a vessel of 140
tons to serve against the Spanish Armada. In Harleian MS.168, f.
177, his vessel is called the Samuell, while in the state papers
in the record office (Eliz. vol. 215, f.76) it appears as the
Solomon.--(Dictionary of National Biography, Vol. XX. London:
    Oxford Univ. Press, 1938).

William Borough, and widow of Thomas Scott of Colchester and
London. She had two sons and four daughters.--(Dictionary of
National Biography, Vol. XX. London: Oxford University Press,
       1938).

in extensive trading with the colonies. He was an incorporator
of the first Massachusetts company and patentee of large
tracts of land.--(Dictionary of American Biography, Vol. 19. p.
       230.)
  . . 1 VASSALL, Henry
. 2 VASSALL, William, Esq., Born ??? 1593? in Stepney, England,
Died ??? 1655 in Barbadoes at age 62; He came first in 1628,
as one of the Assistants of the Mass. Bay Co. to Salem.
Returned to England with his family in the Lyon in 1630. He
came again in the Blessing, in July 1635, aged 42, with wife
Ann, aged 42 and settled at Roxbury. His wife joined the
church in 1635. Removed to Scituate. Admitted to church in
11/28/1636. Took oath of allegiance to Plymouth Colony
2/1/1638. Town officer. His surveying instruments referred to
       in Plymouth Colony Records in 1642. Removed to Marshfield;
propr. 1643; town officer. Was not in sympathy with the
attitude of Mass. Bay and Plymouth governments toward persons
who differed from the received opinions in politics and
religion; and used his influence for greater charity toward
Quakers, etc. The elders expressed their disapproval of his
utterances; the church of Plymouth sent him a message by John
Cook, which is recorded in the book of the Second Church,
Scituate, dated 4/14/1645; hoping he would desist from
proceedings intended, but questioning whether they would
commune with him if he went on. He went to England in 1646
with a petition to Parliament for the liberty of English
subjects. He removed to Barbadoes in 1650 & died in 1655 or
       1656. Will dated 7/13/1655, gave property to his son John;
daughters Judith, Frances, Anna, Margaret & Mary. Part of
these heirs sold their shares in certain lands 7/18/1657.
--(Pope 1965, p. 470.) Gov. Winslow was instructed to answer
charges of a lack of religious freedom in Massachusetts, and a
denial of civil privileges to such as were not church members
by Robert Child, William Vassall and others.--(Holton 1877, p.
52.) On the following page Holton reports that WilliamVassall,
was of Scituate; a man somewhat in advance of the age in which
he lived, in his views of civil and religious liberty. He was
one of the agents sent to England in 1646, with complaints
agianst the Mass. colony. He probably helped to publish a
pamphlet "New England's Jonas cast up at London, etc., a small
quarto of 22 pages, printed in London, in 1647. William
Vassall was one of the first assistants of Mass., chosen in
England in 1629; and came over in 1630, in the fleet with
Winthrop. He made another trip back to England but returned in
1632 and settled in Scituate, in the colony of New Plymouth,
where he remained until about 1650, when, having laid the
foundatino of several large estates in the West Indies, he
removed to Barbadoes in 1655. Hutchinson says he was a man of
pleasant and affable manners, but always in opposition to
government, both in Mass. & in Plymouth.

none of his children settled at Scituate, their
posterity being found in Plymouth and Bristol counties,
and some removed to Barbadoes.--(NEH&GR, Jan. 1863, p.

                the time.

                Salem, Massachusetts, Died ???
  . . 3 VASSALL, John, Born ??? 1625 in Stepney,Middlesex,Engl,
Died Jul 1688 in Jamaica, West Indies at age 63; John
remained in Scituate, where he was a member of the militia
in 1643? and lieutenant under Cudworth in 1652. He became a
captain and later, in Jamaica, was spoken of as "colonel."
When Charles II granted Carolina to the Lords Proprietors
he, with Henry Vassall, a cousin in London, and some other
adventurers proposed to the Lords Proprietors to found a
colony. Early in the summer of 1664 the settlers arrived
at Cape Fear in what is now the state of North Carolina,
and on Nov. 24, 1664, he was appointed surveyor general. He
was the leading promoter of the enterprise in the colony,
and Henry Vassall was the London agent. Holding out as
inducements the promise of land, freedom of relgion, and
the right to vote, they encouraged settlers from New
England, the West Indies, and Europe to join them, but the
colony was unsuccessful. In these circumstances he wrote to
John Leverett, 1616-1679, asking for aid; and in May 1667
the colony of Mas sachusetts Bay voted to send relief to
Cape Fear. On Oct. 6 of that year he was at Nansemond in
Virginia and wrote to Sir John Colleton of the breaking up
of this Clarendon County settlement. He seems to have
remained there some time trying to obtain redress of
grievances against the Lords Proprietors. On Mar. 2, 1672,
he was reported as having arrived in Jamaica, where he
settled in St. Elizabeth's Parrish with his wife, Anne
(Lewis) Vassall. He maintained his connections with the
mainland colonies throughout his life, interested in the
carrying trade among them, the West Indies, and Europe. By
his will, proved in Jamaica on July 6, 1688, he provided
for the education of his son Samuel at harvard College.
Another son, Leonard, lived most of his life in Boston.
His great-grandson, John Vassall, built the
"Craigie-Longfellow" house in Cambridge and was living t
here when the Revolution broke out. He, a Loyalist like
many others of the family, went to England. The vast
family estates in the U.S. were confiscated, and the family
name has left no mark on later republican history. Some of
John Vassall's fortune, however was inherited by Elizabeth
Vassall Fox, a great-great-grand-daughter, the wife of the
third Lord Holland, who became a political hostess in
London and made "Holland House" the center for the Whig
party that was to revolutionize England's own political and
social system.--(Dictionary of American Biography, Vol. 19
