Larkin Baker was born abt 1795 in NC. He married Elizabeth Brush on July 6, 1815 in Pulaski County, KY. In 1820 Larkin was living in Pulaski with his wife and three children. Soon after the census was taken, Larkin moved one county over to Rockcastle. Sometime in the early 1830’s Larkin and his family left Kentucky and settled in Clay County, IN. Larkin’s wife, Elizabeth, probably died before 1847. Larkin married 2nd Mahulda (Denny) VonTrees, daughter of Zachariah Denny, widow of Jacob Vontrees. On the 1850 census for Owen County, Larkin was listed with wife Hulda Baker, age 47, born in NC; James J. Baker, age 3, born in NC (?); and Eliza A. Baker, age 2, born in IN. Larkin died in 1851. Hulda then moved to Boone County, IA, and in 1855, married robert Schooler. Larkin was a farmer. He may also have made money buying and selling land. In 1840 Larkin was named administrator of the estate of Charles Brush and guardian of three minor Brush children. It is believed that Charles Brush was the brother of Elizabeth Brush. In 1842 Larkin Baker sued Shadrack Phipps for monies owed. Shadrack lost the suit and was ordered to pay $34.17½ plus interest. Meshack Phipps acted as surety for his brother. The debt was never paid. Children of Larkin Baker and Elizabeth Brush: 1. Mary Baker born abt 1816 2. Richard Baker born September 20, 1817 3. Nancy Baker born abt 1818 4. Joel Baker born December 26, 1820 5. Sarah Baker born March 22, 1823 6. Susannah Baker born abt 1825 7. Martha Baker born abt 1829 Based on census records, there were probably four more unidentified children.1. Mary Baker born abt 1816 in Pulaski County, KY. She married Samuel Sears. 2. Richard Baker was born September 20, 1817, in Pulaski County, KY. Richard married 1st Elizabeth (?) abt 1840, probably in Clay County, IN. He married 2nd Catherine (Hines) Ellis on April 24, 1859, in Clay County, IN. Richard moved to Iowa in 1881 and died March 8, 1891 in Boone County. Richard was a farmer and, for a short time, had a chair making business. Children of Richard Baker and Elizabeth: A. John Baker born abt 1841 B. Andrew Baker born abt 1843 C. Nancy J. Baker born abt 1845 D. Mary A. Baker born abt 1848 E. Martha Baker born abt 1849 F. Elisha A. Baker born abt 1851 G. Sarah E. Baker born abt 1853 H. Elizabeth Baker born abt 1855 Children of Richard Baker and Catherine Hines A. Adeline Baker born February 28, 1860 B. Luvina Baker born January 1862 C. Matilda Baker born November 1864 D. Amanda Loretta Baker born September 29, 1869 E. Thomas W. Baker born June 7, 1869. He died July 26, 1869. F. Charles Baker born April 5, 1869 3. Nancy Baker was probably born about 1818. She died after 1853. Nothing further is known. 4. Joel Baker was born December 26, 1820, in Rockcastle County, KY. On April 9, 1843, in Clay County, IN, he married Ollie Mitchell. Ollie was also born in Rockcastle County, KY, & was the daughter of John and Mary Mitchell. About 1851, Joel and Ollie moved to Iowa. He died in Boone County, IA, on February 12, 1889. Children of Joel Baker and Ollie Mitchell: A. Julia Ann Baker born February 1844 B. Louisa Baker born November 1846 C. Sarah Baker born May 1848 D. Mary Baker born November 1849 E. Winifred Baker born August 1850 F. Anna Baker born January 1854 G. Martha Baker born October 1855 H. John Baker born January 9, 1857. He died June 25, 1871. I. Priscilla Baker born December 1858 J. Elizabeth Baker born November 1861 K. George H. Baker born abt 1863 L. Elias Baker born March 2, 1865 5. Sarah Baker was born March 22, 1823. She married Martin DeBord, son of Elizabeth (Baker) DeBord, abt 1839, probably in Clay County, IN. They lived in Owen County, IN, until abt 1846. They are listed on the tax rolls for Rockcastle Co., KY in 1846 and 1847. They apparently went back to IN. Martin and Sarah were living in Mercer County, IL, in 1851. Sarah died in Mercer County on November 26, 1860. Children of Sarah Baker and Martin DeBord: A. Elizabeth DeBord born February 12, 1841 B. Mary Ann DeBord born August 18, 1842 C. John Wesley DeBord born March 9, 1845 D. Nancy Jane DeBord born March 31, 1847 in Rockcastle County, KY E. William DeBord January 25, 1848. He died before 1860 F. Hulda DeBord born December 11, 1849 in IN G. Andrew Loren DeBord born May 31, 1852 H. Marion DeBord born March 17, 1854 I. Unnamed baby boy born January 20, 1856. He died the same day. J. David DeBord born September 1, 1857. He died October 1, 1859. K. Sarah Margaret DeBord born November 19, 1858 L. Omar C. DeBord born November 26, 1860 6. Susannah Baker was born about 1825. She married Michael Sappingfield. 7. Martha Baker was born about 1830. She married Robert Dalton, son of John Dalton, Sr. and his wife Jenny (Phipps) Dalton. Martha died before 1860. Robert Dalton taught school in Clay County. His wife and her sister, Mary Sears, attended the school as adult students. Second Generation
