Yoshi was born in August specifically for the Nintendo Entertainment System game "Yoshi". Yoshi was a puzzle game for one or two players where you could hatch a Yoshi from an egg if you did good. Other NES games were: Yoshi's Cookie. I think that's it.
Next, Yoshi appeared in the first game for the SNES: "Super Mario World." Yoshi's Island, which made it's debut here, was even the starting point of the game! Throughout SMW, Yoshi played a major role acting not only as Mario's mount but the reason Mario is here in the first place: trying to save Yoshi's friends.
Yoshi also appeared in "Yoshi's Safari" and made a cameo apperance in the educational game "Mario is Missing", but Yoshi's major break was when he was called as the star of "Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island!" It was his own game at last! In SMW2: YI, Mario is a baby and the Yoshis start a relay system trying to get the babe safely back home. In the meantime, though, they must stave off Baby Bowser, who wants to take Yoshi for a test spin. In the end, Yoshi wins, of course. Yoshi's SNES career wasn't over yet! He appears in "Tetris Attack," a puzzle game, in a fitting tribute to his humble beginnings: Yoshi started life in a puzzle game. And there was "Super Mario RPG", where Yoshi races on his "Yosh'ter Isle." SMW, SMW2, Tetris Attack and SMRPG all appeared on the "100 greatest games of all time" list.
Yoshi wasn't to take another starring role until the debut of the Nintendo 64. Once again he made a cameo in a system's first game ("Super Mario 64," on the roof) and later had a more competent role as a racer in "Mario Kart 64." A game starring him, "Yoshi's Island 64," was planned, but the name was changed to the more creative "Yoshi's Story", which is to date his last starring role.
Today, you can catch Yoshi in such games as "Mario Party" and "Super Smash Bros." for the N64, and also in "Mario Party 4" and "Super Smash Brothers Melee" on the Nintendo GameCube. You can also see Yoshi in the Game Boy version of Tetris Attack, the unstoppable puzzle game, as well as on the Game Boy Advance: "Mario Kart Advance", and "Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World" and "Super Mario Advance 3: Yoshi's Island", both of which are ports of the popular SNES games. From his start in "Yoshi" right up to "Yoshi's Story," and beyond, Yoshi will always be there to cheer up your day.
