MONDAY MORNING MOMENT December 15, 1997 Vol. II Number 46
“Is there any word from the Lord?” This question was asked by Judah’s last king, Zedekiah, a weak and vacillating unbeliever, who did not mean to be as bad as he was. It was answered by the prophet Jeremiah, who had now become the iron pillar and brazen wall God had predicted. Upon Josiah’s untimely death his three sons, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, and Jehoiakin followed him in that order upon the throne; and last, his uncle, Zedekiah. Things had gone from bad to worse for Judah. Now the Chaldeans had surrounded the walls of Jerusalem as the trembling king asked God’s prophet, “is there any word form the Lord?” “There is,” Jeremiah replied; and then as if drumming a lesson into the head of a dull child, he repeated his message: “thou shalt be delivered into the hand of the king of Babylon.”
Viewed broadly, Jeremiah’s message as he gave God’s word to Zedekiah was a word of judgment, of faith, and of salvation. there was a word from the Lord, but the weak and fearful king would not heed it.
This text is relevant. Our own age, in the midst of its decay, is asking “is there any word from the Lord?” If those who try to be witnesses of God’s Word are true, they must echo Jeremiah’s reply of long ago, “there is,” What is God’s word for us in our day? It is “Emmanuel” “God with us.” At this Christmas season, while the whole world is looking at the Baby Jesus let’s give them the word of hope they seek! “Emmanuel”
