MONDAY MORNING MOMENTS Oct. 19, 1998 Vol. III Number 40
The top five reasons why I don’t tithe yet
NUMBER 5: I don’t tithe yet because the church has not talked about
tithing very much.
NUMBER 4: I do not tithe yet because I am stuck on the idea that giving
ought to be useful.
NUMBER 3: I do not tithe yet because I keep forgetting that my entire
life is a gift of God.
NUMBER 2: I do not tithe yet because giving is not always a first
priority or a regular discipline.
NUMBER 1: Are you ready for this one? Here it comes! I don’t tithe
yet: because I do not trust God enough. Or to put it another way:
because I’m afraid.
Fear is the issue, isn’t it! If I tithe, will God catch me? Or will I face financial self-destruction? It is easy for me to add up all my financial commitments and put God last.
So what are we going to do? One response is to give to God a proportion of what we earn. Then we can make a commitment to grow in our giving until we attain a tithe.
In a few minutes, I’m going to try something: I will pull out my checkbook and write a check for one-tenth of what I earned this week. I have to start somewhere, and so do you. Maybe today is the day when you jump in and start tithing. If so, you would be saying, “God, you are the Lord of my life. I love you more than anything else, even more than my money. And to show my devotion, I give you the first ten percent of all that you’ve given me.”
Here is a promise I will make with you today. This time next year, I will report to you how I am moving toward tithing. But here’s the catch: I will be interested in knowing how you are coming along too. After all, we are in this ministry together, aren’t we! If your answer is yes, I will have one less reason that I don’t tithe…yet
“Look at the Nations and watch - and be UTTERLY AMAZED. for I am going to do something in YOUR days that you would not believe even if you were told” Habakkuk 1:5
