Charles Henry Oaten, son of Charles Oaten and Harriet Roberts, was born in the Melbourne suburb of Fitzroy in 1866. He married Catherine Carroll on March 14th 1885 in Fitzroy at 18 years of age. Apparently this marriage, to a catholic, scandalised the family and caused Charles' father to dis-inherit his grandchildren.
Charles and Kate, both aged 19, became first-time parents with the birth of Harriet Margaret Oaten in late 1885. Harriet, the first of 8 children, lived less than a year.
In his adulthood Charles made a living as a bootmaker. This was most likely for Raymond's Boots. Charles, at 34 years of age and Kate, had their last child Alice Eleanor Oaten on May 13th 1901 in the Melbourne suburb of Carlton.
Charles became a widower at 35 years of age with the death of his wife Kate, just a few months after the birth of Alice. This was to herald a difficult time for Charles. Seemingly unable to cope, his three oldest daughters were placed with the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in Abbotsford, and his three sons were sent to a boys home in South Melbourne, probably St. Vincents de Paul. Their youngest, Alice, was placed with a foster home but eventually became a ward of the state. She lost track of the rest of her family, not even knowing she had siblings until her mid-teens.
He married Mary Louisa Gedge in 1911 at 45 years of age. They had a daughter, Winifred, shortly after. Mary died in 1945 in the Melbourne suburb of Mentone, at 75 years of age. Charles died on April 12th 1951 in the Melbourne suburb of Reservoir, at 84 years of age. His body was interred in Coburg cemetary in 1951 in the Melbourne suburb of Coburg.
