Charles Leigh Clare Nicholson, son of Donald Nicholson and Euphemia Scott Gibb, was born in the Lancashire town of Chorlton-upon-Medlock in June 1872. At about the age of 21 he emigrated to Australia with his parents.

Tasmania
He married Louise Augusta Fooks in a Church of England ceremony at St. Martin's Church on December 8th, 1907 in Queenstown, Tasmania at 35 years of age. Louise was born in about 1881 in the small Tasmanian town of Evandale, the daughter of Henry Samuel Cox Fooks and Jane Maria Murray. At this time his occupation was given as as a miner. Charles lived in Queenstown before his marriage, and stayed there with his growing family.

Charles, at 37 years of age and Louise Augusta Fooks, at 28 years of age became parents for the first time with the birth of the improbably named Hubert Evelyn Leigh Arncliffe Donald St.Aldwyn Nicholson on December 16th, 1909 in Queenstown, Tasmania (the first of three children born to them). Hubert was subsequently called 'Boy'. At this time his occupation was given as prospector. Charles, at 40 years of age and Louise Augusta Fooks, at 31 years of age became parents for the last time with the birth of Brandon Murray Scott Nicholson on November 16th 1912 in Tasmania.

Charles died in about 1928.

Charles Leigh Clare Nicholson and Louise Augusta Fooks had the following children:
