James Smith, son of Walter Thomas Smith and Lucy Deane, was born in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia on October 11th, 1881. At this time his occupation was given as clerk, but within three years he had evidently become an accountant. He resided in the city of Adelaide, South Australia in 1904.
He married Elsie Florence Darby at "Kiliora"(?) Stanley St. on December 22nd, 1904 in the city of Adelaide, South Australia at 23 years of age. Elsie was born on April 4th, 1884 in the Lancashire town of Chorlton-upon-Medlock, the daughter of George Leonard Darby and Martha Alice Miller.
He resided MacKinnon Parade, in the city of Adelaide, South Australia in March 1907. He resided in the Sydney suburb of Pott's Point in 1950 at 82 "Kanimbla Hall" in Tusculum Street. At the time of his death his occupation was given as an accountant by his son-in-law Frank Hocken.
James died at at St. Vincent's hospital on June 16th, 1950 in Darlinghurst, NSW, at 68 years of age of prostate cancer. James died at Kanimbla Hall in Tusculum St. His body was interred at Eastern Suburbs crematorium on June 19th 1950 in Matraville, NSW.
