Poem for Jessica

by Arlene Jacobs

I look into my daughter's eyes

So much like mine.

They look back at me.

I look in the mirror and see my mother's eyes,

So much like her mother's eyes.

What did your eyes see grandma?

Our eyes look behind.

We are the women

Who have come before.

Our eyes look forward.

We are the women

Who will see tomorrow.

In those eyes I see the future.

In those eyes I see the past.

Connected through time

One to another.

We are our mother's daughters.

We are our daughter's mothers. 1
