Barb,
a good friend, has compiled this list of books that
may be helpful
especially to children who face the death of
someone
close.
Everett Anderson's Goodbye by Lucilee Clifton. Fairly simplistic book that deals with the loss of a father. Not the greatest of books, but has the possibility of generating some good discussion.
How it Feels When a Parent Dies by Jill Krementz - an interview style book that offers good first-hand accounts from children. Parts would be too "old" for four years-old or under.
When My Dad Died by Janice M. Hammond - Very sensitive, inclusive, accounting of the death, the funeral, afterwards, etc. Presented in a coloring book format which helps get the child involved in the book.
When Did He Die by Audre Harris. Aimed at the younger child, very warm, reassuring book to help answer a young child's questions.
About Dying: An Open Book for Parents and Children Together by Sara Bonnett Stein - not a story book (like those above) but a "teaching" book for adults trying to help children under eight deal with death.
Explaining Death to Children by Earl Grollman - touches on the religious aspects with chapters written by different clergy.
Badger's Parting Gifts by Susan Varley - Badger dies and all his friends get together to mourn, but end up thinking of all the wonderful things for which they remember him.
The Fall of Freddie the Leaf by Leo Buscaglia - the cycle of life explained through the life of a leaf.
Granpa by John Burningham - a very real look at family relationships and the circle of life.
When Somebody Special Dies - like a workbook. Has places to draw pictures, etc.
Lifetimes by Bryan Mellome and Robert Ingpen. A picture book that talks about the cycle of life. It's nice but it's more of an "everyone and everything dies and it's a natural part of life" kind of book. It starts out: There is a beginning and an ending for everything that is alive. In between is the living. Etc. It's profound in its simplicity; comforting in its lack of pretentiousness.
The Tenth Good Thing About Barney by Judith Viorst - a boy's dog dies.
When Dinosaurs Die (A Guide to Understanding Death) by Laurie Krasny Brown and Marc Brown - a picture book. Very straightforward and accessible with good information. Deals with feelings and what happens when people die.
Talking About Death: A Dialogue Between Parent and Child by Earl A. Grollman. For adults to read to help parents deal with children's questions and how to help them through the trauma.
Cactus Hotel by Guiberson (Holt). Not so much about death as the cycle of nature.
I'll Love you Forever by Robert Munsch is about a love's continuance through illness and death.
The Stone Lion by Bill Slavin. It is also featured in February 1997 Today's Parent magazine.
I Tell You a Mystery: Life, Death and Eternity by J Christoph Arnold thru Plough Publishing House. This book addresses fears that every human faces-fears of vulnerability, illness, aging and dying. It is about living each day for love, and facing eternity with the mysterious strength that comes from faith. There is also a chapter about when a baby dies, and many other things. I highly recommend it. -recommendation by Emmy Blough
