Calypso's Bulletin Board:
I'm trying to thin out my "herd" right now. Anyone interested in an albino male breeder, please email me.
Hedgehogs are surprisingly good pets for their being so exotic. And I mean, look at
them, every inch of their spiky body, from their little wet nose to their stubby
tail, is so darn cute!
Please visit the pages on my sweet girl, Juniper and the albino that I got from Ohio, Popsickle They're real cute! Also, check out the Hedgie People's ICQ Page Unfortunately, I am no longer on ICQ, but check these out!
Go visit the Unofficial Hedgehog Mailing list Page It's still under construction though!!!
This page is about the actual handling and getting to know a hedgehog. The animal isn't going to love you at first sight, so don't worry if they are a little slow to get used to you. I'd start by holding her(I'm going to put her/she in this because my hedgie is a she. "them" would be incorrect and him/her just gets annoying) in the front pocket of a sweat shirt, you know, the kind that has an open end on each side? She love it in there. Just have her get used to your smell. They are very dependent on their olfactory senses, so get her used to your smell! I let my hedgie run around my room, under my supervision, of course, and she loves it. Another hint for getting her used to your smell, have her crawl into and sleep in your clothes. It helps if you have worn them for a day, but please don't put her into those disgustingly dirty clothes you rolled in the mud with. It's just not sanitary.
Once she is comfortable with your smell, move on to more intimate things, such as having her sleep in your lap. Careful, she'll try to burrow into your crotch, with involves some persistent shoving of her snout into the area. Just warning you. I don't know if anyone else would mind, but I let my girl crawl around in my shirt. She likes my warmth, and I find it quite relaxing, unless she's tickling me. That's another story though.
As far as exercise goes, I recommend a wheel. There's nothing like watching a hedgie running in a wheel, they look so cute! It's really for their exercise, though. Even though my hedgie has a wheel, I still let her run around in my room. Make sure you hedgehog-proof the room first. Cover up any hole that you cannot reach into, and pull out a hedgehog from. Make sure doors are closed and closets, drawers, ect. If you can't find your hedgehog after her exercise period, don't worry! She's probably in an article of clothing on or near the floor. I once accidentally took my hedgie on a weekend ski trip after "losing" her while packing. I found her later in my jacket sleeve.
There are many webpages about hedgehogs, and I will list some of the best ones I've
found below. I tried to cover stuff that wasn't on these pages, and I tried not
to cover stuff that was on these. If you want good info on the basics of hedgie-caring,
go to one of the following pages:
