follow at Trenton Cemetery, Trenton. Survivors include two daughters, Jacqueline

Roger Neal Sutton Jr., 74, of 1204 Barbara Lane died June 3 at Lenoir
Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 17, 1924 in Kinston. He was the
son of the late Roger Neal and Caroline B. Sutton of Kinston. He was a
longtime merchant with A.J. Sutton & Sons, Inc. and Belk, Inc. He is
survived by his wife, Thomasine Ward Sutton and sons, Stephen L. Sutton,
Ward C. Sutton and Carroll G. Sutton, all of Kinston and Roger Neal "Trip"
Sutton III of Raleigh; sister, Nancy Sutton Collier; brother, Michael D.
Sutton and wife, Annie of Smithfield; and was predeceased by a sister Marian
Brock Sutton of Raleigh. Since his retirement, he had been an instructor
at Lenoir County Community College, teaching "square foot gardening" and
affectionately referred to as "Dr. Dirt." Graveside services will be conducted

ALBERTSON -- Pearl P. Herring, 90, of 3130 Hwy 903 died Friday,
June 5, at Countryside Villas in Warsaw. Herring was a member of Snow Hill
Freewill Baptist Church. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. at the Pink
Hill Funeral Home Chapel, Pink Hill. Survivors include her son, Robert
Herring, and his wife Edna Herring, of Albertson; three grandchildren,

James Henry Mills, Jr.
GOLDSBORO -- James "Jim" Henry Mills, Jr., 69, of 211 Brookwood
Drive in Goldsboro died Saturday, June 6 at his home. A Pitt County native,
he was the son of the late James Henry Mills, Sr., and Martha Anne Cannon
Mills. Mr. Mills retired from the United States Army after receiving many
honors. His awards include the Bronze Star Medal and the Air Medal for
service in Vietnam, the Army Commendation Medal for service as Chief Clerk,
Military Personnel Division, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff, and a
Certificate of Achievement for Strategic Communications Command while in
Europe. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2771, the
American Legion and the Moose Lodge in Goldsboro and Kinston. Mr. Mills
was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, a National Honor Fraternity of the Junior
Colleges. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Seymour Funeral
Home Chapel with Rev. Horace Johnson officiating. Burial with full military
honors will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery. He is survived by his wife,
Georgia Davis Mills; a daughter, Teresa Mills Boyette of Deep Run; a son,
John H. Mills of Kinston; a step-son, Steven L. Walker of Charlotte; five
sisters, Edna Atkinson and Lossie Gates of Kinston, Gladys Johnson of Trenton,
Cammie Bryan of Farmville and Leona Dixon of Kings Mountain; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Bryant and by two twin grandchildren,
Kenley Lee Boyette and Kelly Anne Boyette. The family will receive friends

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Ellen M. Rouse, 88, of Seven Springs died Saturday,
June 6 at Britthaven Nursing Home in Goldsboro. She was born in Wayne County
to the late Stephen and Ida Gurley Rouse. She was a retired farmer and
a twenty-year employee of the Caswell Center. Graveside services will be
conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at the New Hope Friends Cemetery with Rev. Chris
Singleton officiating. She is survived by a sister, Minnie R. Holmes of
La Grange; two nephews, Milford Singleton and his wife, Enzie Singleton
of La Grange, Eugene Holmes ans his wife, Faye Holmes of La Grange; three
nieces, Ida Mae Grantham and her husband Carl Ray Grantham of Greenville,
Johnnie Spence of Kinston and Agnes Davis of Rosewood. The family will

She is survived by her husband, Elijah Solomon of Kinston; her mother,

school at the church for over thirty years. Services will be conducted
11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of the Tyndall Funeral Home in Mount Olive
with the Rev. Bob Fussell and the Rev. Maynard Quinn officiating. Mrs.
Walker is survived by one daughter, Audrey Millard of Albertson; two sisters,
Pearl Brock and Nellie Parker of Mount Olive; six grandchildren; and seven

Methodist Church for 55 years and was also in the Eastern Star Chapter

George Edward Hill, 88, of Kinston died June 9 after a long illness.
Mr. Hill was born in Folkston, N.C. to John Henry Hill and Acoree Jarman
and was a lifetime resident of Kinston. He was married to Katie Durham
Hill, who preceded him in death in 1991. In the past few years he lived
at Rose Vista Retirement Center in Kinston. He was retired from Duke University
where he was an electrician. In his early years he was a professional wrestler
in North Carolina, holding a lightweight championship title. A memorial
service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethel Free Will Baptist
Church, U.S. 258 North, Kinston, with the Rev. Archie Ratliff officiating.
Survivors include one son, George A. Hill and daughter-in-law, Sara Hill

University and Pitt Community College. He was employed at Collins and Aikman

Church where he served as a deacon. He was assistant chief of the Bell
Arthur Volunteer Fire Department and was past president of the Pitt County
Fire Association. Mr. Edwards was preceded in death by his father, Noah

David Preston Lutz, 71, died June 15 at his residence after an extended
illness. Lutz was born in Gaston County. He was retired as a laboratory
director at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. He was a nursing home administrator
for years and also an avid golfer. Lutz was a charter member of North Carolina
Medical Association (Lab) and served as president. He was technician of
the year for two years. He was a 30-year member of Kinston Lions Club and
member of Bardstown Baptist Church where he was a member of the choir,
Sunday School class and ordained deacon. Survivors include his wife, Edna
Dollinger Lutz; three daughters, Teena Taylor of Raleigh, Jane Culver of

TRENTON -- Leona Parsons Arthur, 79, of Trenton went to be with
her Lord on Wednesday, June 17, 1998. "Miss Leona," as she was affectionately
known, was born on Sept. 25, 1918, to the late Jobe Thomas Parsons and
Allena Maie Gooding in Maysville. She is survived by twin sons, Joby R.
Arthur of Raleigh and Thomas R. Arthur of New Bern, a daughter-in-law,
Teresa C. Arthur of New Bern; a stepdaughter, Louise A. Boyd of Scotland
Neck; a stepson, Allen R. Arthur of East Brewton, Alabama; seven grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren. She, also, is survived by two brothers, Jerry
A. Parsons of Hubert and Raynor P. Parsons of Maysville; two sisters, Velma
P. Barbee of Richlands and Blanche P. Mallard of Maysville. She is further
survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law
and wonderful friends. Her husband, Jason R. Arthur, and their infant daughter,
Linda Faye Arthur; and a sister, Natalie P. Carl, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Arthur grew up in the Onslow County community of "Up -the-River,"

LUMBERTON -- Ellis Monroe Walters, 85, a resident of 401 Warwick

Walters was born in Robeson County. He was a member of the East Lumberton
Church of God where he was active in the Monroe Walters Mens Class and
had taught Sunday school for 30 years. Services will be conducted at 3

Harold Roberts
WINSTON-SALEM -- Harold Roberts, 78, of 1244 Arbor Road, a native
of Albemarle, N.C., and a former resident of Gastonia, died June 19, 1998,
of cancer. Mr. Roberts was born in 1919 to Bessie Cloniger Roberts and
Ray C. Roberts, Sr., of Gastonia and Dallas, N.C. Mr. Roberts was the Co-Chief
Executive Officer of the Duplan Corporation from 1960 to 1965. His offices
were in New York City and Winston-Salem, which was the company's headquarters.
He joined Duplan after serving in the Army in World War II in Italy and
North Africa in the 605th Ordinance Battalion. While abroad, he was selected
for a private audience with Pope Pius XII. After he returned from the war,
he graduated in 1950 with a B.S. in Commerce from the University of North
Carolina where

GOLDSBORO -- Ruby J. Showell, of 117 Merrywood Dr., died June 20
at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday

She is survived by her husband William Showell of Berlin, Md.; five sons,

Bea Sisk
ATHENS, Ga. -- Bea Sisk, 70, of 1405 Timothy Road died May 9. Sisk
was a native of Jones County. She graduated from Jones County High School
and Parrott Hospital School of Nursing. Sisk retired from the University
of Georgia in February 1987 as administrative secretary in the department
of housing. She was also secretary to Tim Jones, former dean and founder
of the School of Veterinary Medicine. She was with UGA for 24 years and
had lived in Athens for the past 40 years. Sisk was a charter member of
C.P.I. and a member or Athens Elks Aidmore. She was a member of Holy Cross
Lutheran Church. Services were conducted at 2 p.m. May 11 at Bridges Funeral
Home with the Rev. David Pickering and Pastor David Hart officiating. Entombment
was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Survivors include her husband, W. Oscar
Sisk Jr.; three sisters, Mrs. Jack Jones, Mrs. Ray Ball and Virginia Griffin,
all of Trenton; a brother, Stanley Jones of Trenton. In lieu of flowers,

Kay Sutton
LA GRANGE -- Kay Sutton, 67, of the Bucklesberry Community died
Friday, June 26, 1998 at his residence. Kay was born in Lenoir County to
the late Finley and Eliza Creech Sutton. He was preceded in death by his
brothers, Albert and Johnnie Sutton. He was a retired farmer and a member
of Hickory Grove United Methodist Church. Services will be conducted at
3 p.m. Sunday at Rouse Funeral Home in La Grange with the Rev. Jim O'Hara
officiating. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Survivors include
his wife, Evelyn Cunningham Sutton; son, Finley L. Sutton, and daughter-in-law,
Robbie Sutton; daughter, Libby K. Sutton Smith, and son-in-law, Roy Smith;
grandson, McKeever Smith. Kay is also survived by a brother, Parrott Sutton
of La Grange; five sisters, Martha Hardy of Moss Hill, Mary Hardy of Kinston,
Huldah McLawhorn of Hookerton, Betty Rose Herring of La Grange and Jo Ann

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Annie Mae Grady, 66, of 1890 Liddell Road, died
Friday at Wayne Memorial Hospital. She was the daughter of the late Henry
Lee and Sadie Phillips Grady. She was a retired registered nurse with Pitt
Memorial Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Rouse
Funeral Home with the Rev. Bryce Rouse officiating. Burial will follow

Ralph Chester Wasdon, 85, of 1409 King Circle died June 26 at Lenoir
Memorial Hospital. Mr. Wasdon was a member of Neuse River Orchid Society,
Cape Fear Orchid Society of Wilmington and attended Queen Street United
Methodist Church. Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Queen
Street United Methodist Church with the Rev. Craig Ham, Dr. Ray Harrison
and the Rev. Ray Broadwell officiating. Interment will follow at the Daugherty

at noon Thursday at Shiloh Baptist Church, 99 Davenport Ave., Newark, N.J.
Interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery, Bloomfield, N.J. Survivors
include her husband, James Welton Jones Sr.; daughters, Carol Boone, Nora
Walker, Linda Barnes, and Deborah; sons, James Jones Jr. and Ronald Jones;

F. Kermit Tyson Sr.
AYDEN -- F. Kermit Tyson Sr., 79, died June 29 at his residence.
Tyson was a retired farmer, and a Pitt County native. He was a member of
Winterville Baptist Church, served in the U.S. Army during World War II
in European Theater, and a member of American Legion Post No. 39. Services
will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Farmer Funeral
Service in Ayden. Interment will follow at Winterville Cemetery. Survivors
include his wife, Doris Broadhurst Tyson of the home; two sons, F.K Tyson
Jr. of Ayden and Charles E. Tyson of Nashville; three daughters, Nettie
T. Evans of Ayden, Anna T. Britt of Maxton and Amy T. Bennett of Pinetops;
