Betsy Martin Carden
CHAPEL HILL -- Betsy Martin Carden, 68, of
1515 Franklin St. No. 34, died May 5 at her residence. She was born on
August 30, 1929, the daughter of George Gilbert Martin and Lacy Williams
Morgan Martin. Mrs. Carden was a member or Moseley Memorial United Methodist
Church, and a graduate of Robert E. Lee Elementary School, George Washington
High School, Anne Boyer School of Dance and Mary Washington College of
the University of Virginia in 1952. She taught at Radford College from
1952-1954. She received her master's degree in dance from New York University;
began as a member of the dance faculty at Brooklyn College, where she became
a tenured professor and chairman of the dance department, retiring in 1986.
Mrs. Carden served as board member, president and first executive director
of the American College Dance Festival Association from 1979 to 1991. She
originated its scholarship program, helped develop its choreography series
and supervised many regional and national college dance festivals. She
also served as president of American Dance Guild; was active in the American
Dance Festival and was executive director of the Dance Notation Bureau.
She was married to her husband, John Richard Carden, on August 5, 1967
who survives of the home. Other survivors include two sisters, Ardelle
Morgan Carter of Lake Wales, Fla. and Mary Jane Martin Bright of Kinston;
five brothers, W. Ray Martin of Tucson, Ariz. and James P. Morgan, George
G. Martin Jr., Robert H. Martin, and M. Gene Martin, all of Danville, Va.
The family will receive friends at 2 p.m. Friday, May 8 1998 at Townes
Funeral Home. A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. with the Rev.
Richard Cobb officiating. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

Edward C. Hudson
MOUNT OLIVE -- Edward Clifton Hudson, 77,
of 216 Pollock St., died May 5 at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Hudson
served in the U.S. Air Force for 22 and one-half years where he retired
as a chief master sergeant. He served in World War II during Pearl Harbor.
He was the first chief master sergeant at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

Pickle Company. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints, Mount Olive Ward. He served as a bishop in Kinston, Atlanta and
Mount Olive. He was a member of the High Council, the Stake Presidency,
the Young Men Program, served with Boy Scouts of America Program, and served
three Stake Missions as a missionary. Services will be conducted at 2 p.m.

62, died Saturday, May 9, 1998. His residence was Holly Ridge Farm. The

Mr. Tripp, a native of Chester, Va., was a graduate of Kinston High School.
He received his degreen in industrial engineering at North Carolina State
University. He had been a resident of Greenville for the past 36 years
and formerly worked for E.I. Dupont Company. He owned and operated Regional
Storage and Transport of Greenville and formerly owned and operated Spunwind,
Inc. He developed Holy Ridge Farm and Stable where he bred and trained
Thoroughbred horses. He was honored as owner/breeder for North Carolina
in 1992. An avid golfer, he was a member of Brook Valley Country Club and
Greenville Country Club. He was an ardent supporter of both the East Carolina
Pirate Club and the North Carolina State Wolfpack Club. Survivors include

Charles D. Huffman
Charles Douglas "Chuck" Huffman, 49, a resident
of 2237 Northridge Place died May 11 in Greensboro from injuries sustained
in an automobile accident. Huffman was born in Durham County, son of Paul
D. and Ruth Harrison Huffman of High Point and Lake Junaluska. He graduated
from High Point College with a bachelor's of science degree in behavioral
science and received his master's degree in education from the University
of Virginia. He was a member of the Chesapeake Chapter of the United States
Lighthouse Society where he served as vice president for programs. He received
a fellowship to write a book about lighthouses from South Carolina to Virginia.
Huffman was one of the highest decorated Eagle Scouts in this region earning
Bronze, Silver and Gold Palms and was the youngest man in Virginia to receive
the Silver Beaver Award in Scouting. Graveside services will be conducted
at 3 p.m. today at Holly Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Thomasville with
the Rev. Jim Rissmiller officiating. He will remain at J.C. Green &
Sons Funeral Home in Thomasville until 2:30 p.m. In addition to his parents,

Nathaniel L. Jones
"If I can help someone along the way, my living
shall not be in vain." Nathaniel Lee Jones, the seventh born to the late
Amos and Eliza Hicks Jones was called home to Eternal Rest on Tuesday,
May 12, 1998, after being hospitalized since April 7. He was 83 years old.
Affectionately called "Pete," Nathaniel Lee Jones was born August 14, 1914.
His trademark was his smile and easy-going personality. All during his
illness, he never complained. One would ask him how he was doing and his
reply would be, "Doing pretty good, thank you." At a very early age, Nathaniel
developed the work ethic and worked numerous jobs to help his family. He
worked 30 years as a civil service worker at Cherry Point Marine Base.
To meet the needs of his family, he would carry riders in his station wagon
with him to Cherry. Survivors include Bessie Jones Moore and Dorothy Jones;
two sisters-in-law, Bertha Jones and Alice Jones. He also leaves Marion
Jones and Robert Adams, nephews, who along with Emma Nobles, cared for
him during his recent illness and a host of nephews, nieces, relatives
and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Fonnie
B. Murrill and Ruth M. Jones Scholarship Foundation for the Nathaniel Lee

Samuel B. Oliver III
KINSTON -- Samuel Brent Oliver, III, 54, died
May 14 in Ambroise Pare Hospital, in Mons, Belgium, after a brief illness.
He was a 1961 graduate of Grainger High School and received his MA degree
in Business Education from Appalachian State University. He taught business
in several schools in the states of North Carolina and Florida. He taught
for two years in the Jones County Schools. During his five-year service
with the United States Army, he was headquartered in Brussels, Belgium
with NATO. After receiving an honorable discharge, he accepted a position
with the Department of Defense at SHAPE. For the past twelve years, he
has been employed as a teacher of business and computer science at SHAPE
American School in Mons, Belgium. Mr. Oliver was preceded in death by brothers
Thomas Allen and Marvin Ray and sister Barbara Lanier. He is survived by
his parents, Sammy and Mildred Oliver, of 605 Wake Ave.; sisters Betty
O. Kinney and twin Sandra O. Wilcox, all of Kinston, Cora Ol Davenport,
of Trenton; several nieces and nephews; and a very close cousin Pam. A
memorial service will be held on Tuesday at SHAPE American High School,
where Mr. Oliver served as senior class advisor, in Mons, Belgium. Interment

James John Shornock Jr., 56, died May 16.
He grew up in New Jersey and served in the U.S. Navy. He lived in Pennsylvania

William E. Reck, 67, of Kinston, formerly
of Benson, N.C., and Little Rock, Ark., died May 21 at Lenoir Memorial
Hospital in Kinston, N.C. Mr. Reck was a professional engineer and worked
over 20 years in industry prior to joining the faculty at Lenoir Community
College. He retired from his position as Dean of Vocational/Technical programs
in 1992 and in his retirement worked as a consulting engineer at KNC in
Kinston. Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Diemer Reck; his daughter,
Becky Reck Mock and husband Fred Mock, both of Quantico, Va.; his brother,
Kenneth Reck of Clinton, Ark. and one grandson, Thomas Mock. Services will

Henry Clay Casey, 80, of 404 West Atlantic
Ave., died May 22 at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Goldsboro. He was self-employed
throughout his life. He was a member of the First Baptist Church. He was
instrumental in the raising of the Civil War ship, the Ram Neuse, earning
him the nickname Mr. Ram Neuse. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m.

George Austin Dedrick, a native of Waynesboro,

of the DuPont Red Cross Blood Mobile, and active member of the Grifton
United Methodist Church, Keep America Beautiful Committee, former chairman
of the Lenoir County Development Committee, and a friend to all. A memorial
celebration service will be held Monday May 25, 1998, 2:00 p.m. at the
Grifton United Methodist Church followed by a visitation in the Church

Samuel B. Oliver III
Samuel Brent Oliver, III, 54, died May 14,
1998 in Ambroise Pare Hospital, in Mons, Belgium, after a brief illness.
He was a 1961 graduate of Grainger High School and received his BA and
MS degrees in Business Education from Appalachian State University. He
taught business in several schools in the states of North Carolina and
Florida. He taught for two years in the Jones County Schools. During his
five-year service with the United States Army he was headquartered in Brussels,
Belgium with NATO. After receiving an honorable discharge, he accepted
a position with Department of Defense at SHAPE. For the past twelve years
he as been employed as a teacher of business and computer science at SHAPE
American School in Mons, Belgium. Mr. Oliver was preceded in death by brothers
Thomas Allen and Marvin Ray, and sister Barbara Lanier. He is survived
by his parents, Sammy and Mildred Oliver of 605 Wake Ave., sisters, Betty
O. Kinney and twin Sandra O. Wilcox all of Kinston, Cora O. Davenport of
Trenton, several nieces and nephews, and a very close cousin Pam. A memorial
service was held on Tuesday, May 19 at SHAPE American High School, where
Mr. Oliver served as senior class advisor, in Mons, Belgium. Dr. Aubrey

GRIFTON -- Edwin Wallace Reeves Jr., 77, of

Methodist Church. Mr. Reeves was the son of Edwin Wallace Reeves Sr. and
Gertrude Corbett Reeves of Ivanhoe, N.C. He attended Davidson College and

Pacific Theater. He retired from DuPont Company, Kinston plant, in 1982.
Mr. Reeves was a member of the Grifton United Methodist Church. He is survived

Frederick B. Archer
MAGNOLIA -- Frederick Bedford "Fred" Archer,
68, of 432 E. Main St. died May 26 at Guardian Care of Kenansville after
a long bout with Parkinson's disease. Archer, while in Tennessee, served
on the Rescue Squad at Johnson City. For the past 34 years, he has made
North Carolina his home. He served as plant manager of the National Spinning
plant in Warsaw and Beulaville, from which he retired in 1985, due to poor
health. He was an active member of Magnolia United Methodist Church serving
as deacon, pastoral chairperson, finance committees and official board.
He also served on the Duplin County Airport Committee, Duplin County Rescue
Squad, and was a Duplin County Fireman. Services will be conducted at 11
a.m. Friday at Community Funeral Home chapel in Warsaw. Interment will
follow at Devotional Gardens of Warsaw. Survivors include his wife, Sue

WINSTON-SALEM -- William Edward Connor, 51,
of 301 Linville Ridge Courts, died May 25 at Forsyth Memorial Hospital
in Winston-Salem. Connor was a native of Greene County. He was one of the
first black students chosen to integrate Greene County High School. He
was also a graduate of Pace University in New York City where he lived
numerous years of his life before relocating to Winston-Salem. He was a
soldier in the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam Conflict. Though he
was discharged from the Army with honors, he chose to continue to serve
his country in the Army Reserve. Graveside services will be conducted at
1 p.m. Friday at Shady Grove Memorial Park, Snow Hill Route 2 with the
Rev. Jessie Jones officiating. Survivors include his mother, Doris Jones
Connor; his father, Edward Earl Connor of Snow Hill; two brothers, James

26 at Craven Regional Medical Center in New Bern. Haddock was a native
of Pitt County, and a resident of Craven County, living most of his life
in New Bern. He was a civil service employee at Cherry Point for 29 years,
prior to his retirement. Haddock was a member of the Tabernacle Baptist
Church in New Bern. He was also a member of the Doric Masonic Lodge No.
568 A.F. & A.M., the Scottish Rite Bodies, the York Rite Bodies, the
Sudan Temple, the New Bern Shrine Club and the Eastern Star No. 129, all
of New Bern. He was also a member of the Sudan Trucker's Unit. Services

and a gospel singer. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in

Marjorie Marshburn Efird, 89, died Tuesday

Mordecai Hannibal White Jr., 51, of 731 N.
Milton Ave., Baltimore, died May 27 at Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore.
He was a graduate of Adkin High School. Services will be 2 p.m. Monday
at Jumping Run church in La Grange with Pastor William Anthony Lawson Jr.
officiating. Burial will follow at Southview Cemetery. Survivors include
his mother, Laura V. White of Kinston; three sisters, Regina Clark and
Janice L. White, both of Kinston, and Susan D. Coples of Decatur, Ga.;
and three brothers, Jonathan H. White and Shelton D. White, both of Kinston,
and Terry White of Raleigh. The family will receive friends at the home
of Laura V. White, 206 Hill St. Viewing will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today
at Lane's Funeral Home.
