Moharram

The whole universe takes its share in the lamentation on the ultimate-of-the -sacrifices, the martyrdom of Syed-ush-Shuhadaa Hazrat Imam Hussain Aleh Salam. This practice of mourning is called 'Azadari (Azaadaari)'.

Amroha is distinguished in the peculiar way it observes this solemn occasion of religious sanctity.

Some Marsiye recited in Amroha

Like many other muslims, people in Amroha observe a period of almost 70 days in full reverence for lamentation on this great tragedy. This period starts from the end of Zilhajj, continues in Moharram and Safar-e-Muzaffar, and ends up in the first ten-days of Rabi-ul-Awwal. But in general, this whole period is also sometimes (loosely) called 'moharram'.

In Azadaari, there are two aspects in which Amroha is recognized throughout the world. These are
    1) azadaari, the way mourning is practised in Amroha, and
    2) creative contributions in the sphere of azadaari which includes

  • khitaabat or zakiri, and

  • poetic compositions on Maarkaye Kerbala; as Marsiye, Salaam, Nohey, etc

Marsiye

In the poetic contributions, many amrohvi poets earned laurels for the heart-touching Marsiya, Salaam and Nohey which highlighted various aspects of Maarkaye Kerbala in an effective and original style.
