Hello, my name is Alyson Stiles. I am 19 years old and finishing my fourth semester at San Joaquin Delta College. This web page is dedicated to my environmental activity project for my Natural Resources class.
"The purpose of this project is to give the student (me) a proactive learning experience that will have a direct positive effect on the local or global environment. In other words, the activity I perform should improve environmental conditions on earth as a result of me physically DOING SOMETHING." - Mr. Dodson
The project that I chose is called Don't Just Sit There--Do Something! I went to Isleton Elementary School and spoke to Mrs. Johnson's 5th grade class, and helped them become involved in efforts to save the wetalnds and streams from being used as waste dumps.
As a class, we explored opportunites to help perserve wetlands and streams, and other places for the mining dumps to deposit The final decision of the class was to sent a letter to President George Bush, and let him know the importance of our streams and wetlands. No conclusion was drawn on an alternative for dumping sites.
Each letter included that the proposed rule would harm the environment and wildlife across the nation. They also stated that the Clean Water Act was adopted to protect , not harm the nation's wetlands, streams, and other waterways.
For more information on what you can do and other efforts to protect OUR environment, visit the Nation Wildlife Federation Web Page. I really learned a lot from this experience. I had to learn about the Clean Water Act, ways to get involved, and ways to motivate others to get involved. |
