Welcome to
~ Bassetville Acres ~
home of
Bailey ~ Cheers ~ Lucy ~ Boris ~ Mandy
We are 5 very sweet, very adorable, VERY spoiled basset hounds. We live in a rural area of mid-western Ontario, Canada, about two and a half hours northwest of Toronto. Browse through our photos, get to know us and see just how cute we are!!!
Can you help or do you need help getting a hound-in-need to a new home? Rides Across America is the place to visit! And our Lucy just happens to be the reason it began!
Are you considering adopting a basset hound as a companion? Can you help out with basset hound rescue? For information on rescue in Ontario and throughout Canada and the United States, please visit Basset Hound Rescue of Ontario's web site.
Have you considered breeding your basset hound. If so, please visit and read through Penelope's web page first.
The "kids"…..
Bailey was born December 23, 1995 and started us slaves, Dawn and Michael, on the road to basset
service. As we walked in the door to see her in March of 1996, Bailey hopped off the couch, put her paws up on Dawn's knee and kissed her. Needless to say, she came home that day!!! Bailey was the product of a backyard breeder who's only interest was making money and she has the medical problems all too common with carelessly bred dogs. Fortunately she has an incredibly sweet disposition. This adorable little girl did us the honor of being the ring bearer at our wedding! A very frisky puppy though, Bailey was lonely for a playmate...
... so in August of 1996, thanks to the wonderful folks at Michigan Basset Rescue,
Cheers joined our family. Cheers was born on January 5, 1991 and at 5+ years old, through no fault of her own, was left with no family to love. But that has all changed... Cheers is the "Queen Mum" of Bassetville Acres!!! She rules her domain with little more than "the look!"
When we read about Lucy on Basset-L, we knew she was meant to be a part of our family. She was born on June 9, 1991, and had a few different homes before her accident. In September of '96, Lucy tried to get friendly with a horse. Unfortunately the horse didn't want to be pals and kicked Lucy, fracturing her spine. Her previous family were ill-prepared to care for a now partially paralyzed, very determined little girl with an incredible zest for life. So on March 23, 1997, again with the help and support of Michigan Basset Rescue, as well as Emerald Empire Basset Hound Fanciers (EEBHF) and many others, Lucy joined our family... (after a sidetrip in which the airline temporarily lost her!) On Lucy's first visit to the vet we discovered she was heartworm positive, but she came through treatment with no trouble! She's had many medical problems since, but Lucy continues to fight any and all odds!
Lucy has been supplied with a properly fitted cart thanks to the terrific people of K-9 Cart Company in Big Sky, Montana, giving her all the mobility and freedom of her basset buddies. Lucy doesn't think she is any different than her buddies… in or out of her "wheels", and quite often takes steps on her own. It still amazes us to see her get up and run or hop across the room or the yard! She has built up the strength but unfortunately she doesn't have the balance....yet!!! We haven't given up hope that one day she might… Lucy is certainly determined enough!!!
Life has changed drastically with the loss of our sweet little Lucy girl. Very sadly she left for the bridge on June 29th 2004. It is a devastating loss...
Boris was the senior hound of Bassetville Acres up until June 21, 2000 when we had to release him to the rainbow bridge. He was born on March 7, 1983 making him well over 17 years old! He joined our family in June of 98 after his family could no longer care for him. We found out about Boris through Basset Rescue of Old Dominion (BROOD) and he was relayed to Ontario from Maryland with the very kind assistance of 7 different Rides Across America volunteers! Other than the progressive arthritis that eventually made life too painful, Boris was a pretty healthy old guy… although a wee bit grumpy. We are missing our big old fella terribly...
Mandy is another senior hound…and an adorable little sweetheart at that!!! She was 11 years old when we adopted her on December 27, 1998… we don't have her exact birthdate. This easy going, very happy little girl was dumped in a Michigan shelter just one week before Christmas… without even her collar to comfort her! Thank goodness this shelter called on Michigan Basset Rescue to come to her aid. Once we read about Mandy on The Daily Drool we knew that she too was meant to be with us! We still wonder how anyone could have given this sweetheart up… especially in the manner in which they did! We are very happy though that she is a part of our family!!!
Our sweet Mandy has now left us too. She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma on May 23, 2000 and on June 30, 2000 we had to let her go to a life without pain. The heartache is overwhelming....
