Our Holmes Family Lineage

Descendant from John "Messenger of the Plymouth Court" Holmes (c.1612-1667)

Through Josiah4 Holmes (1716-1783) and Ruth5 Cooke (1722-1790)

To Our Great-Great Grandmother Sarah Antoinette Holmes (1847-1919), wife of Ezra9 Phinney (1845-1918)

Its been several years now since discovering that the ancestry of our Great-Great Grandmother, Sarah Antoinette Holmes (1847-1919) of Plympton, Massachusetts, wife of Ezra Phinney (1845-1918), proved to descend from John "Messenger of The Plymouth Court" Holmes. Sarah was the daughter of Captain Ira Sampson Holmes (1820-1881) pictured above, and Rebecca Wood Wright, a descendant of Plympton's Wright family that began with Richard Wright's marriage to Sarah3 Soule. Ira Holmes' father, Sampson Holmes (b.1789), was the son of Francis Holmes (1744-1812). It was Francis who moved the Holmes line from Kingston into Plympton. The son of Josiah4 Holmes and Ruth5 Cooke, who are buried at Kingston's First Universalist Church cemetery, Francis married at Plympton Lydia Sampson. Lydia was the daughter of Philemon and Rachel (Standish) Sampson and her paternal grandparents were Benjamin3 Sampson and Margaret Parker. So the delineation of this line has added a third line from Abraham Sampson to our ancestry, through his son George Sampson who married Elizabeth Sprague and then their son Benjamin. This brings as well another collateral Standish--Alden--Mullins line through Sarah's great-great-great grandmother Rachel Standish.

Ancestry of Sarah Antoinette Holmes

Sarah Holmes is descended from several Mayflower passengers, perhaps most directly from Francis Cooke through the Josiah Holmes and Ruth Cooke union mentioned previously. She is also descended George Soule, at the start of the Wright family of Ira Holmes' wife Rebecca Wright, Sarah's mother. Sampson Holmes' wife was Bathsheba Bisbee (c.1797-1839) of the Plympton Bisbee family descended from Elisha Bisbee through his son Hopestill who married hannah Churchill, daughter of Plympton patriarch of the Churchill family, William Churchill who moved to Plympton early in its existence as a town in 1707.

Also, please view the Francis4 Cooke's Gravestone link below if interested in the Cooke/Holmes line from Josiah Holmes and Ruth Cooke. Francis 4 Cooke's gravestone at Kingston Universalist Church cemetery deperately needs rescuing and I'm looking for ideas/help at restoration.
