Lameness is usually caused by poor foot care. There are three factors to keep in mind when taking care of the foot.
(1)Keep the Feet Dry - Exposure to moisture for long periods of time can lead to foot rot because the moisture softens the the hoof. If possible, a goat should be housed or left on cocrete during wet periods. However, if you choose to house your goat keep in mind wet bedding can also be harmful. Housed goats need to kept on dry bedding.
(2)Keep the Feet Moving - Try to get your goat to walk on hard surfaces, such as concrete, as much as possible
(3)Keep the Feet Properly Trimmed - If your goat is kept in an area where the feet are not naturally worn down then regular hoof trimming is required. The time intervals will depend on an individual basis. I have heard anywhere from two to twelve months between trimmings. So just keep an eye on there feet and you can learn the time frame that best suits your needs.
