~ Final Web Page Check List ~

Now that you have completed your "work of art", your "masterpiece", your "pride of joy" you should carefully preview and test your Web pages to make sure they look and work the way you intended them to. Many readers will not return to Web pages that contain errors.

Below you will find a final check list to make certain each and every aspect of your pages will meet the critical eyes of all those that peruse your pages.

  • Checking your Spelling

  • ~ Check your Basic HTML ~

Check list for your basic HTML...

    • Important HTML, HEAD, BODY tags are on each page

    • Each page is properly titled

    • All HTML tags have the closing tags

    • Each page shows name & email address and date page updated

    • (P) is used to separate paragraphs instead of nothing

    • (blink) is used sparingly

Make sure your paragraphs are split up properly. A common mistake is to forget the (p) tag between paragraphs. If your paragraphs are too far apart using the (p) tag, try using (br) instead as this tag doesn't add extra space between paragraphs.

Make sure all of your HTML tags are closed. For instance if you forget to add an ending tag for (h1) the entire page would be done in (h1) instead of the size of type you originally wanted.

    ~ Check your Spelling ~

Check each and every one of your pages to ensure that the spelling is correct before making them available on the Web.

There are programs that you can purchase that will spell check your documents for you. I simply copy and paste each of my pages into my Netscape email or Microsoft Word and run the Word Spell Checker from there. It is cost effective that way.

    ~ Check your Lists & Tables ~

Below is a check list for using lists and tables...

    • Make sure you have replaced large paragraphs with lists and tables

    • Make sure you have used the tab key to line up lists and each list item in HTML source so you can easily see which items are in the list

    • Make sure that all rows in table have same columns

    • Make sure you have used row and column headers in tables

    Go to HTML Index.

    ~ Check your Images ~

Ensure that your images appear where they should. When you add several images to your home page, it is easy to use the wrong keywords or align them incorrectly based on what you want. Make sure your image is properly placed and sized on your home page and that the text flows around the image correctly.

    ~ Verify your Links ~

Check that all the links on your pages take you to the intended destinations. Check these links on a regular basis to make sure these links still exist and contain information you want your readers to see.

    Go to HTML Index.

    ~ Use A Validation Service ~

Use a validation service on the Web to check all of your Web pages to ensure there are no errors. A validation service will visit your Web pages and notify you of any errors in your use of HTML.

To validate your home page, it must first be available on the WWW, not your personal computer.

One of the most popular validation services is W3C World Wide Web Consortium located at...

    ~ Test Presentation ~

You should test your Web pages to see how easily you can access and browse through the information. Ensure the pages have a consistent design and writing style and also check for formatting and layout errors.

    Go to HTML Index.

    ~ Use a Test Audience ~

Ask your friends, family and colleagues to check your pages. Ask for their input on the content and design.

    Go to HTML Index.

~ More Tips for Your Final Check ~

TURN OFF IMAGES ~ Some people turn off images or unable to view images with their browsers. Test your pages without images to make sure these readers will still find your pages valuable.

TRY DIFFERENT WEB BROWSERS ~ Your pages will look different when viewed with different browsers. Make sure the pages look the way you intended regardless which browser is being used ie.. Netscape - Microsoft Explorer - Lynx

CHANGE WEB BROWSER DISPLAY ~ Most browsers display bars at the top of the screen to allow you to quickly perform tasks. Always test your pages with all of the bars displayed to ensure the bars do not hide important information on your pages.

VIEW ON DIFFERENT COMPUTERS ~ Your pages can look and sound different when displayed on different computers, especially if your pages contain animation.

VIEW AT DIFFERENT RESOLUTIONS ~ The resolution of a monitor determines the amount of information the monitor can display. The two most popular resolutions are 640x480 and 800x600.

MODEM SPEEDS ~ See how long it takes for your pages to transfer at different speeds. If your pages contain too many images it will take longer for the page to finish loading.

    Go to HTML Index.

    ~ Save Your Homepages ~

Perhaps this is the most important suggestion that I can possibly make and that is to BACKUP each and every one of your homepages and all associated files (images, audo, midis, etc.) in a safe place, just in case!
