D.R. BRAY To the Editor of the Vinton Record David R. Bray who died at his late residence in Swan Tp., on the 24th ult., at
the age of 42, is entitled to more than a passing notice. The deceased
was a gallant member of the 75th O.V.I. [Ohio Volunteer Infantry] entering
in Co. I, of that Regiment in Nov. 1861. His comrades remember him
as one of the most fearless soldiers, always cheerful under the most
adverse circumstances. Sergt.[sic] Bray served till January 1865, and
was in all of the many battles his regiment saw. He rendered valuable scout
duty at Chancelorville. At Gettysburg he received a severe wound from a
piece of shell which, together with his arduous service on the coast of
South Carolina and in the swamps of Florida, completely broke down his
health and finally resulted in his death by consumption. With Mr. Bray’s failing health came also a total loss of his property in a
mercantile enterprise entered into sometime in 1868. He leaves little to
his wife and three little children but a name and reputation they may well
be proud of. His remains were interred at Bethel Chapel, a few hundred yards from the house
in which he was born. Let his neighbors and the good citizens of Vinton remember David Reilly Bray,
one of their noblest and best friends, who now belongs to the proud
list of the Reeds, Earnhart, Fouch, the Witherspoons and a host of others
of his brave comrades. --- Vinton Record July 30, 1874. THIRD GENERATION
OBITUARY
Pearl Bray, youngest son of John and Catherine Byerly Bray, was born in Swan township, Vinton County, Ohio, on October 23, 1867. He was the last surviving member of a family of seven children. The other children were: Susan, Jacob, Nancy, Daniel, Mary and Mason all of whom were highly respected citizens. His parents were among the prominent pioneer families to settle this community. At the age of 12 years Mr. Bray was afflicted with inflammatory rheumatism which left him badly crippled for life. On December 4, 1894 he was married to Drucilla Bertha Linn. Their home was blessed with three children; namely: Joe, who died at the age of four years, John at home, and Pearl Jr. of Swan township. A grand-daughter, Sylvia Mary Bray preceded him in death. Mr. Bray lived his entire life in the house in which he was born. With the aid of his faithful and energetic wife he was a very successful farmer in spite of his physical handicap. Their farm has been in the Bray family for more than 100 years, and under the management of John, and the use of soil conservation practices it is one of the outstanding farms in Vinton county. Mr. Bray was always interested in the welfare of his family and of the community. Ever ready to respond to the needs of sick friends and neighbors. He was cheerful in disposition, kind and generous, faithful and true to those whom it was his privilege to serve. For 36 years Mr. Bray served as clerk of Swan township. The Bray home for many years has been known as a home where the unfortunate are welcomed with sympathy, understanding, and generosity. A home where for 54 years, contentment, and love were supreme. A love and trust existing between husband and wife that could be broken only by death. Mr. Bray was a loyal supporter of the Bethel church until the Zeloska charge was discontinued. Throughout his entire life he faced life courageously, lived joyously, and bore his afflictions patiently: we never heard him complain of his condition. He has been confined to the immediate premises for several years, being able to go out but very little ever under the watchful eye of his family. Mr. Bray has been confined to his bed since August where willing hands and loving hearts were ever ready to do everything possible for his comfort. He was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, Order of the Eastern Star, the Plymouth, the Pomona, the State, and the National Grange. He departed this life at his home on Saturday morning October 9, 1948 at the age of 80 years, 11 months, and 16 days. He is survived by his wife and two sons before mentioned, one grandson, Lawrence and many more distant relatives.
