Donkeys are among the most misunderstood and most abused American animals. Domestic and wild donkeys in the United States are mistreated in horrific ways. Some donkeys are used for roping practice. Some donkeys are severely beaten for what is viewed as stubborness and defiance. Some are just abandoned to pastures and neglected which is cruel treatment for a friendly and intelligent animal.
Perhaps the biggest reason that donkeys are abused is that they make people look stupid. Donkeys have a keen sense of self-preservation. They like to think about new things before they react which is often misinterpreted as stubborness. Donkeys are quick learners, but can't be forced into doing something.
Donkeys are easily taught to pull a cart or carry a pack. They seem to enjoy having a job and a sense of purpose. The more time spent with a donkey, the more it will bond with you. Even going for a walk with your donkey, is a pleasant experience. Donkeys love to "help" around the farm and make good draft animals for the small homestead since they don't require the lush pastures and space that horses need.
