Will of Matthew Covey
December 29, 1783
In the name of God amen the twentyninth day of December seventeen hundred and eighty three. Matthew Covey being of good and sound memory thanks be to Almighty God for it, and calling to remembrance the uncertain estate of this transitory life, and that all flesh must yeald to death when it shall please God to call, do make constitute ordain and declare this my last will and testament in manner and form following: revoking and annuling by these presents all and every testament or testaments, will or wills heretofore by me made and declared either by word or writing and this to be taken only for my last will and testament and none other and first being ________ and sorry from the bottom of my hart for my sins past most humbly desire forgiveness for the same. I give and commit my soul unto Almighty God, my redeemer, in whose and by the merits of Jesus Christ I trust and believe assuredly to be saved, and to a full remition and forgiveness of my sins and that my soul with my body at a general day of resurrection shall rise again with joy and through the merits of Christ's death and passion possess and inherit the kingdom of heaven prepared for his elect and chosen, and my body to be buried in such a place where it shall please my executors hereafter named to appoint and now to the settlin my temporal estates and such ________to bestow upon me, I do ordain, give and dispose the same in manner and form following, that is to say, first I will that all the debts and dues as I own in right or conceive to any manner of person or persons shall be well and truly paid, or ordained to be paid within convenient time after my decease by my executors hereafter named.
Item...........I give and bequeath unto my son Noble Covey one shilling sterling in full of my estate.
Item...........I give and bequeath unto my son John Covey one shilling sterling in full of my estate.
Item...........I give and bequeath to my son Frances Covey ......................................., and one case and bottles, one sorrel colt two years old next spring my wearing apperrel and all other cloths I have. My will and desire is that my sons William Covey and Frances Covey shall be my executors, and that the remainder of my living shall be equally divided amongst my five daughters and the executors viz't (namely) Elizabeth Littleton, Ann Shileod, Mary Gray, Sarah Dukes, and Rebekah Camper; in witness I hereunto havset my hand and seal in the presence of tests.
