1669 JOHN NEWTON, nauta 30, Anlaby and Elizabeth Laycocke, widow, 36, Selby (marriage at Selby). [Paver's Marriage Licences (Yorkshire Archaeological Society, Record Series, V. 43, pg. 143)] The description of John Newton as nauta means "mariner".

, would have arrived on the ship "Endeavour" that got to Piney Point, St. Mary's Co., MD on that date. [MD Archives, Vol. 66, Preface 25]

1675, Sep JOHN NEWTON, Mariner, complained to Council of MD at St. Mary's City "that one John Morris hath offered and done him several abuses" (MD Archives, Vol. 15, pg. 49)

1676 March 27, JOHN NEWTON, "Mariner" noted as owing a debt of 100,000 lb. Tobacco [likely from the unsettled debt on the cargo of the Ship "Endeavour" he was Master of that was later liened against the Estate of Robert Farrer who had deceased???][MD Archives, Vol. 51, pg. 178]

1676 April 10, JOHN NEWTON described as "Master" of "Shipp called the Endeavour of Hull" in the name of Robert Farrer who was factor or agent for the said Robert Swaine of Newcastle upon Tyne.[Maryland Provinical Court Proceedings, 1676, Vol. 66, pg. 205]

1677 Aug 25, John Newton was named juryman in Westmoreland, Co., VA
1678 Feb, JOHN NEWTON by order of VA Assembly, he is given liberty to transport horses, etc., from MD to VA, who lately came over from MD, married in VA and proposes & promises a settlement of himself and family here. (VA Mag Vol. 33, p. 301).

1672 May 15, JOHN NEWTON house at Anlaby appears to have been used by a Congregation of Independents after he had permanently left England. In British Calendar of State Papers: Domestic (Vol. 1671-72, p. 578), a memorandum of request by Robt. Collier to Sir Joseph Williamson, Clerk of the Council for licenses for Richard Astley, at Hull, named "John Packland at the house of John Newton, Anlaby in Hillshire, (sic)," and for Thomas Olier, at Newland, Yorkshire, "all Congregational." 1691, Jan 6, JOSEPH NEWTON sold 300 acres to Wm. Fitzhugh part of land purchased by John Newton (seller's father) May 10, 1683 in Stafford Co., VA and situated on the north side of Machodoc River at Beaver Dam adjacent to lands owned by Benjamin Newton and John Newton, Jr. and crossing Church Road. made his Will & Last Testament, with a codicil of Dec. 21, 1697
1695 JOHN NEWTON bequeathed his lands at Camblesforth and Carleton, Yorkshire, England and his father's house in Hull to his eldest son along with the land he bought of Joseph Laycock.
1695 Aug, 25, Will of JOHN NEWTON , proved in Westmoreland Co., VA, July 28, 1697. [See Transcription], 19 August 1695; 28 July 1697. Primary heirs as follows:
l) eldest son John lands at Carlton and Camilsforth, in Yorkshire, Eng. and the house in Hull, Eng. that was home of Thomas Newton, father of John Newton, Sr.; also the land bought of Joseph Laycock;
2) son Joseph, et al 1,000 lbs. of tobacco each;
3) son Benjamin, et al 1,000 lbs. tobacco each;
4) son Gerrard at Little Falls, 1,000 acres in freshes of Rappahannock with mill ...
5) daughter Elizabeth Newton one-half of a tract of 2,150 acres .....;
6) wife all my plate for life and then to my daug.;
7) son Thomas 350 acres and a mill at Totuskey;
8) wife Rose 5,000 lbs. of tobacco each year for life and various other bequests;
9) grandson, John, son of Joseph Newton, 200 acres of land.

1709, July 8, BENJAMIN NEWTON DEPOSITION: He stated his age as, 40, and that John Newton, the elder, his father, lived at a place called Anlaby, near Hul (hence Benjamin was born abt. 1669, making Elizabeth Laycocke his mother & she the 3rd wife of John ........ stated that his father, John Newton, emigrated to the colonies after the death of his last [English] wife.) Further that he [deponent] knew Thomas Newton who lived in Hull who always owned and acknowledged the said John Newton the elder this deponent's father to be his lawful and eldest [son] and this deponent lastly saith that he came from the said Thomas Newton's his grandfather when he came to Virginia.

1709 July 8, MADAM ROSE NEWTON Deposition -- "aged 80 yrs. or thereabouts" stated that John (her dec'd husband) is called "Master and Mariner" and speaks of John Newton as "Late of Kingstone upon Hull".

1712 Dec. 1, ROSE NEWTON WILL, Westmoreland Co., Va probated Feb. 3, 1713 by Thomas Newton, who was the sole heir to whom Rose granted all her lands in VA & MD.

1755 DEPOSITION OF ELIZABETH BERRYMAN, (paraphrased) aged 70 years, stated that John Newton the Elder was her father and that he informed her he was a Yorkshire man and had 3 wives and 1 son by each wife, namely, John, Joseph, and Benjamin. Deponent also stated that prior to emigrating to the colonies, he lived at Anlaby, a village about 3 miles west of Hull. After the death of his last wife, John came to Virginia and married the depts. Mother. He later returned to England to bring his 3 sons to Virginia. John & depts. mother had the following children: Gerrard Newton, Thomas Newton, Dept.
