Some people think I'm a nut because of some of the Don Quixote-type stands I take against companies whose social stands, products, or services I don't agree with. If you're one of those, you can go ahead and delete this message - it won't do either of us any good. For years I have refused to purchase products from companies like Levi Strauss, Eddie Bauer, Franklin/Covey, GEICO Insurance, and Nike (to name a few) because of their outrageous social and political stands against issues I believe in. (I also do more shopping at WalMart because they stand for what they believe, even if it is unpopular.) There are alot of television shows, movies, and music I refuse to watch or listen to because I disagree so strongly with the militant, bigoted social/political views of the producers, directors, or artists. Most of these shows and music used to be my favorites, but I stopped watching and listening. Some of the people closest to me in life could care less what these companies stand for - if they want their products they buy them. They think I am just being a crank. When I talk to these people in-depth about my opinions, it is not long before the conversation degenerates into ridiculous leaps in logic that have me walking around penniless, hungry, naked, and on the verge of death because I can't work for anyone or buy anything, anywhere. And then there is the frustrating argument that I am a hypocrite because of all the products I buy from companies whose social/political policies disagree with mine, but I don't know about them - yet. As I find out about these things, I adjust my purchasing accordingly. I am boycotting companies with whose stands I do not agree and urge you to do the same - both by not buying their products and by letting them know why. Remember: All that is needed for evil to prevail is for good men and women to do nothing. Little things DO matter. If you have made it this far, read on. Here is the real meat of the message. Procter & Gamble recently pulled their advertising for the Dr. Laura Schlessinger Show on UPN this fall. Their decision about pulling their advertising is based on: "...Dr. Laura's views on topics which include working single mothers, single parent households, homosexuality and interfaith couples. "The more we hear from people, the more convinced we are that we've made the right decision to cancel our advertising on Dr. Schlessinger's upcoming television show." (To read the entire statement, click here.) If you don't listen to Dr. Laura that much, this probably won't mean much to you. But if you have listened consistently, you will understand that she speaks the truth in a compassionate way on these and other important social issues. I believe P&G's stand is based on ignorance and bigotry. Take a look at the list of products at the end of this message and see which ones you use. If you feel strongly about it, stop buying them. Then send a message to P&G to let them know you won't be doing business with them anymore. And pass this message on to anyone you think might be interested. Go here to register your feedback.
