THEME: FAMILIES COLOR: ORANGE SHAPE:
HAND

OBJECTIVES:
1. Develop an understanding of family members, child's role
In the family.
2. Activities and celebrations of diverse families within
our community.
3. How families are different--single parent, two
"mommies/daddies", guardians,
grandparents and/or others raising children, large
Carries, small families, diverse
families.
4. Each family is special, each member of the family is
special.

CENTERS: - "Entire classroom made into a home"

Blocks:
**Set up in den/family room part of house.
Continue October's block construction leaving up (no clean
up), add more homes,

shops, streets etc.
Different kinds of homes: igloos, log cabins, rock, mobile,
tents, homeless homes,
nursing
homes, apartments, duplex, triplex etc.
Floor plans of child's home.

Art:
**Decoration part of house.
Poster, photographs of child's family (including pets), other
families.
Pictures of celebrations, native dress.
Family tree.
World map -- where mom/dad/grandparents are/live.
Play dough homes - log, rock, brick..
Hand, foot painting, plaster of Paris casts.

Science/Math:
**In kitchen part of house.
Cooking activities - invite family members in to bring
favorite family recipes, and

help children prepare.
Feely boxes with family.
Measuring instruments - cups, spoons, ruler, tape; things to
measure - flour, salt,
Floor ties, fabric.
Compare color, shape, of hands, feet, hair, eyes, height,
weight.


Literary:
**In den, family room, living room of house.
Books, records, cassette stories about families, family
members, diverse families, pets.
Make own book of "My Family" - draw pictures, dictate words.
Desk with writing paper, check book, typewriter, pencils and
pens.

Dramatic:

**Entire house.
Family member dress ups, housekeeping.
Props like phone, magazines, TV (box with picture glued on,
but a real remote)
Food cans/boxes,

Music:
**Entire house.
Radio with age appropriate/diverse music playing.
Instruments especially if family member is in a band.
Dancing

Playground:
What a family does when they leave the house.
Sonic type drive-in, McDonald's, etc.
Movie.
Shopping.
Hospital.

Rainy day activities:
Visit neighbors (another room in center) swap

Field trips:
Go places where the family may go, but go into the back and
see how it works,
i.e., HEB-store room, shoe store-store room, fast food chain,
movie theatre,
projection room.
