THEME: NEIGHBORHOOD HELPERS, CONSTRUCTION; COMMUNITY

OBJECTIVES:
1. To help children to develop and reinforce their understanding of
the role of
members of society, such as firefighters, police officers, post
office workers,
teachers, lawyers, cement truck drivers, cooks, store workers,
etc., (discuss
same / different of MP's, DPW, PX, commissary etc vs civilian.)
2. Learn types, purpose, parts, and how made, of shelters, and/or
homes,
buildings, ship, planes, roads, etc. (any construction). Where
the community
helpers work.
3. Field trips to different places in the community: museums, schools,
parks, or stores, etc.
Noting the community helpers and the construction of place where they
work.

CENTERS:

Blocks:
Make city streets with stores, hospitals, neighborhoods.
Trucks /cars / trains / planes: people, dogs, cats, trees, fences,
etc.
Large boxes-make fire station, grocery, mall
Sand table for towns, strip mall, sea shore with businesses that are
at beach

Art:
Posters, photographs of famines
Paint boxes that you have in block area
Use aluminum foil for windows, roofs; pools/lakes/rain
Cotton foam "peanuts" for snow
Sand painting art for streets, sidewalks, paths
Make puppets - finger, hand puppets from socks, paper bags, paper
plates
Phone book, catalogue collage


Science/Math:
Tools used to construct, play money, maps for measurement and map
symbols.
Taste foods, rake leaves,
Cooking activities- pack your snack /lunch (like workers) go out on
playground to eat.
Make a snack and "sell" it with play money.
Cook/taste different autumn foods: pumpkin/seeds, squash, corn on
cob, cut corn, cream corn.
Note: A taste does not have to take place of snack/meal
Repair items like telephones, radios, clocks with hand tools like
pliers, screwdrivers etc.

Literary:
Books, records, cassettes, of stories about community helpers,
construction
workers/machinery/tools, sounds of things around the house, at a
construction
site, name this noise cassettes (noise of computer printer, toaster
popping, truck, etc.

The phone book.
Catalogues

Dramatic:
Community helpers dress-ups
Puppets--put on puppet show for parents or another room/another
center.


Music:
(See Literary paragraph #1.)
Make up songs: "The Fire Truck Goes ....." "The Big Truck Goes
......." etc.

Playground:
Do a car wash, gas station, mechanic shop.
Refrigerator boxes for children to cut, paint, decorate into a store
or community, plane, bus

Rainy day activities:
Chairs/boxes set two by two for a train, plane, bus, fire engine,
ambulance
Follow the leader-train, planes, bus, trucks

Field trips:
Neighborhood, school, mall, PX (military only), MP station, hospital,
etc- while there, look at
construction of building, what it is made of, how high? two or three
stories? as well as
how many workers are there, what are the jobs they do etc.

Bring in parents that are community helpers, store workers, realtor,
plumber,
etc., ask fire persons to bring truck, put on their scary stuff, EMS
to bring
ambulance; MP's to bring car, sanitation worker to bring garbage
truck
