August, 2000

Well, another new experience for me today.  I gave my first buzz cut.  I have been cutting hair for 45 years.  (My daughter has been cutting hair for 22 years.)  Eventually, I began to do the hair of my grandchildren, too.  I am a whiz with the scissors and comb.

I have given my grandson several short haircuts over the years, although I prefer it longer.  I usually have to wheedle and cajole to get him to let me cut it the way I want.  I had to talk him out of several bad haircuts--I am particularly reminded of that awful fad a couple of years ago which looked as if someone turned a chili bowl down over the "victim's" head, then shaved everything below the edge of the bowl.  Last couple of years, he has wanted a buzz cut.  I kept talking him out of it.  Today, he was adamant.  He talked his mother into buying electric clippers yesterday and showed up on my doorstep today with clippers and the information, "My friend says a #1 on the sides and back and a #3 on top".  Translated: 1/8 inch, sides and back, and 3/8 inch, top.  Horrors.  Shades of the fifties.

I read the instructions and then read aloud to him the part that said to start with the attachment that cut the least, then decide if you wanted to cut more.  He agreed.  I cut with the 3/8-inch attachment.  Nope, he wanted it shorter.  I cut with the 1/4-inch attachment.  He looked in the mirror and assured me that it was still too long, "And cut it higher on the sides."  Finally, he got his 1/8-inch haircut.  I held out for 1/2-inch hair on top--an eighth-of-an-inch moral victory.

Then he showered and shampooed his hair.  Afterwards, he stood in the living room, running his hand over his already-drying, short fur.  He said delightedly, "Everyone is going to want to feel my head."

I said, "Really?"

He said, "Yeah, everyone will say, 'Let me feel your hair.'  It feels goood."

Ah, haaa!  It's coming clear at last.  He's 12 years old.  There is a bushel of hair on my patio because he wants some little girl to feel his head.

Well, it had to happen sooner or later!  Poor boy.  It can only get worse.

Buzz Cut and Sunburn
Even in the shade, her face glows.

"It feels goood."

"All right!"  [The dark place on the
back of his head is a shadow.  Trust me,
he's as bald there as on the sides!]

Thumbs up!  Girls rule!
