Enlisted Record and Report of Separation


Among the most useful records I have identified in researching a veteran's service is the Report of Separation and Discharge.  This record is packed with information and dates to help recreate the primary elements of one's service, including:

*   Date and place of induction
*   Grade upon separation
*   Military occupation and specialty
*   Battles and campaigns
*   Decorations and citations
*   Dates of overseas departure and return
*   Unit from which separation occurred

This kind of record can be requested here.  Note that a disastrous fire in 1973 destroyed upward of 18 million official military personnel records at the National Personnel Records Center, including many for Army and Air Force personnel.  But don't let that stop you from making the request anyhow!  My father's record looks like this:
