Welcome to

Donna's Family Tree House

Kick back, relax, have some iced tea or lemonade. You've picked the right spot if you're looking for a chat, some quiet time to read, or maybe the chance to find a long-lost cousin.

Books have taken over our attic, garage, bedrooms, living room floor, rented storage space .... I've tried my hand at writing fiction, but I'd rather read. Click on the book to read a bit about some of my favorites. (The book page is going to be updated real soon - there are a lot to add!)

We were introduced to hockey in 1980 by my friend and co-worker Martha Stelzner, and quickly became fans of the Indianapolis Checkers. Then the Raleigh IceCaps for their 7 seasons here - Dorton Arena is a fantastic venue for minor league hockey! Now we have our own NHL team, the Carolina Hurricanes. My husband Phil enjoys the game so much, he learned to skate and took the courses necessary to referee youth and adult hockey here in the Triangle. Kept him busy for 9 or 10 years, until diabetic retinopathy forced him to quit.

One of these days, I have to get my scanner back from my one and only kid. Kim is a red-headed, blue-eyed, left-handed throwback to an earlier generation. Several earlier generations, in fact, although we sure didn't know it when she was born! You can see an old picture of my cutie here. She's a good kid, most of the time. She has her own page, too. She's a college graduate, and technically she isn't a newlywed any longer - she and her husband Tom were married on June 18, 2004. I am *not* old enough for this.

Three days after Kim graduated from high school in 1999, she left for a whirlwind trip to Italy and France. Her flight home from Paris included a 3-hour layover in Chicago. She didn't know that her dad was waiting for her outside the International Terminal at O'Hare ... and the look on her face was priceless. :)

When I don't have my nose in a book or I'm not yakking online, you'll find me digging around in my family tree. Haven't found a single famous person, president, or horse thief yet!

Some of the places where I've found traces of my ancestors are:

Reunions and People Searches

Maybe it's that 40th birthday, or maybe it's because I've missed every high school reunion. Who knows? Anyway, I've registered with some of the web sites geared toward reuniting classmates, high school or college. Half a dozen former high school classmates have gotten in touch already, and I hope to hear from many more. It's been wonderful to hear from so many people who "knew me when".

I went to school in Mt. Healthy, Hamilton County, Ohio (Ethel Frost Elementary 1965-1971, North Junior High 1971-1973, Mt. Healthy High 1973-1974, class of 1977), and Bartlett, Shelby County, Tennessee (Nicholas Blackwell - Bartlett - High School, 1974-1976. What can I say? I skipped a year.).

Check out these reunion links, and get registered!

In the meantime ....

I've gathered up a hodgepodge of favorite sites
