Elizabeth Anglin is the daughter of William Anglin this is stated in
the marriage license for Moses Cade and Elizabeth Anglin.
[NI049]
There is a story that has been passed down in the family that Samuel
Anglin went unarmed to a social gathering where Jonas Grimes shot at
Samuel's feet to make him "dance". Samuel, having been severely
provoked, went home to get his gun, and people warned Grimes that Samuel
had done so, and that he had better clear out. As Grimes was crossing
the river in his canoe, Samuel shot him dead and headed immediately
west. A published account of this incident has been found which accords
perfectly with the story handed down in the family, but which simply
states that "there had been trouble between them" (Samuel And Grimes),
whthout going into the nature of the "trouble." This incident, according
to the published text, occurred in 1825 at Booth's Ferry, which had
earlier been known as Anglin's Ford (probably after William Anglin, the
original owner of the land at the present site of Phillipi). The river
where this incident took place then had its western bank in Harrison
Co.(W VA) and its eastern bank in Randolph Co. (W VA). The published
account says that Samuel came back in disguise about two years after the
murder to get his wife and family, and that he was later thought to be
living with Indians in the Rocky Mountains, but one of the townsmen saw
him on the banks of the Mississippi. Samuel is named in the census for
Harrison Co., (W VA), in 1810 and 1820. It appears that in 1810 he and
his wife had 4 boys and a girl. In 1820, it appears they have 12
children with them, born anywhere from 1800 to 1825. There is a court
record dated 21 Sept. 1857 in Monroe Co., IL, where Isaac Anglin,
administrator of the estate of Samuel Anglin, petitioned for an Order
permitting him to sell land to pay debts. Named as interested persons
are: John Anglin, minor heir of Samuel Anglin; Elizabeth Irwin and her
husband James Irwin. There is another court record dated 24 June 1859,
wherein Isaac Anglin, administrator of the estate of Samuel Anglin,
obtained leave to make a final settlement of the estate, leaving $224.11,
which the Court ordered him to pay over one third to the widow and
remainder to the heirs of Samuel Anglin.
