Erb Marriage Alliances
The table below shows marriages between descendants of Nicholas Erb and some other Mennonite families which they repeatedly turned to for wives and husbands over several generations. Most of these marriages took place in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania or Waterloo County, Ontario in lightly populated rural areas.

The pool of people from which a spouse could be sought was limited by the sparse population, the desire to stay within the German-Swiss culture, and -- most of all -- by the Mennonite prohibition of marriage outside the faith. So it was not uncommon for two brothers in one family to marry two sisters in another or for a brother and sister in one to marry a brother and sister in the other. And sometimes a man whose wife died young would then marry her sister.

Each row in the table represents a marriage. The Erb spouse is on the left and the allied family spouse is on the right. The numbers are birthdates, arranged from earliest to latest for the non-Erb spouse. Some of the birthdates are estimates.
