Alsatian Geography The departments of Bas-Rhin (Lower Rhine) and Haut-Rhin (Upper Rhine) derive their names from the northward flow of the Rhine river. All of the ERB immigrants whose birthplaces have so far been identified were born in Bas-Rhin where Stasbourg had become a center of Mennonite activity. When the Mennonites first emigrated from Switzerland in the early 1700s, Alsace had not yet been divided into two departments, Germany was not yet a nation state, and the area to the east of the Rhine was part of The Palatinate.
