BEAR LAKE, Manistee Co., Michigan - about 1895

"BUY your SHOES here -- Jim McGuire" says the boot-shaped sign above the outside clothing display. Meanwhile, a carriage drawn by two horses approaches up the unpaved main street. This was a small town at the edge of an inland lake -- about 5 miles from Manistee, the county seat. The picture is from an old postcard.

Emery Titus and Mary Ann Erb moved here from Canada about 1880 and it was here that their children Chelsea Marcellus and Genevieve Eileen were born. Also living here were a number of their relatives who had all emmigrated from Otterville to Bear Lake at about the same time.

They included Mary Ann's parents William Scanlan and Catherine Donovan, Emery's father Joseph L. Erb with his second wife Adelia Seamans and their family, Joseph L. Erb's brother Henry L. Erb and his wife Sarah Seamans (Adelia's sister) and their family, and Thomas Simmons (father of Adelia and Sarah) and his family.
