These pictures were taken about 1910 when Tom was the manager of a borax mine in the Tehachapi mountains of Southern California. At that time "20 Mule Team Borax" was a familiar kitchen product. It's name referred to the double row of mules needed to haul the heavy borax wagons down the steep mountain roads to Bakersfield, where the borax was shipped out by rail. Tom told stories about how the mine's Chinese cook would chase after the miners and muleskinners with a hatchet when they complained too much about the food. |
