Tracing Facial Features Over Four Generations

George Albert Erb's
unidentified
grandmother

Charlotte Brighton - her
daughter or daughter-in-law

Mary Ann Erb
Charlotte's daughter

George Albert Erb -
Charlotte's son (age 8)

Annie Erb
Mary Ann's daughter

The distinctive wide jaw and prominant chin of the unidentified grandmother shows up most clearly in her great-granddaughter Annie. But Annie could have inherited it either through her grandmother Charlotte Brighton or her grandfather Simon Erb (whose photo is missing).

Charlotte seems to have a narrower jaw and a more triangular face than her daughter Mary Ann. So Annie's wide jaw and deep chin may have come from Simon Erb's side of the family. And that suggests that his mother, Mary Clemens, may be the unidentified grandmother in the photo. But it is also possible that Charlotte transmitted these features from her mother, Amy Willson, without displaying them herself.
