FORT MOULTRIE
Fort Moultrie, as we see it today, was completed in 1809 and is the third fort on this site. The National Park Service administers Fort Moultrie as part of the Fort Sumter National Monument. The interior of the fort has been restored to reflect the story of American seacoast defense, and a visitor center is located near the fort. Calhoun Mansion

A 24,000-square-foot Victorian Baronial manor house, c. 1876, features a 75-foot domed ceiling with stairwell.

Charles Towne Landing
Off S.C. 171 about 3 mi. N.W. of downtown Charleston
An unusual park located on the site of the first permanent English settlement in South Carolina. Take a tram ride guided tour of the original 1670 fortification. Board a replica of a 17th-century trading ketch, explore seven miles of pathways through beautiful English park gardens, walk through the enclosed pathways of the animal forest, and view the Settlers' Life Area where 17th-century herbs and plants are grown.

Dock Street Theatre

On the site of one of America's first playhouses, the theatre is a combination of the reconstruction of an early Georgian playhouse and the preservation of the Planter's Hotel, c. 1809.

Cape Romain National Wildlife Refuge
Off U.S. 17 North, 20 miles north of Charleston.
A stretch of barrier islands and salt marshes that make up one of the nation's most outstanding wildlife refuges. The 60,000-acre refuge is a true wilderness experience. A boat leaves several times a week from Moore's Landing for a day trip to Bulls Island.

Francis Beidler Forest
35 miles N.W. of Charleston. Take 1-26 W. to exit 187; S. on S.C. 27 to U.S. 78; W. to U.S. 178 and follow signs.
The largest remaining virgin stand of bald cypress and tupelo trees in the world. Walk through this portion of Four Holes Swamp along a 6,500-ft. boardwalk. Special programs in season.

Santee Coastal Reserve
Off U.S. 17 just south of the Santee River
This 24,000-acre area, including an 11-mile stretch of beach, is a haven for waterfowl, wading birds, alligators, snakes, raccoons and deer. Endangered sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Nature trails, a canoe trail and a bike trail are provided. Beach is accessible only by boat.

North on U.S. 17 out of Charleston
Visit the aircraft carrier Yorktown, the second aircraft carrier of its name, replacing the original lost during World War II. See how 3,000 crewmen worked and lived. The length of three football fields, it houses exhibits of bomber and fighter planes on the hangar bay and showcases letters and mementoes of the crew. Also open for tours are the submarine Clamagore, the Coast Guard cutter Ingham, the destroyer Laffey, a re-creation of a Viet Nam naval support base, and the Medal of Honor Museum. An 18-hole golf course provides another diversion.

Boone Hall
Eight miles north of city on U.S. 17
Dating from 1681, Boone Hall Plantation was a grant from the Lords Proprietors to Major John Boone, a member of Charles Towne's first fleet of settlers. Primarily a cotton plantation, it has one of the most beautiful entrances in the South with ancient live oaks leading the way for 3/4 mile. The plantation complex features the original cotton gin house and slave row. A Georgian mansion was constructed on the site of the original house in 1935 using its original woodwork and flooring. The main floor only is open for tours.

S.C. Scenic Hwy. 61, about 10 miles past U.S. 17
Adjoining Drayton Hall Plantation, this world famous 300-year old plantation has been in the same family since the arrival of Thomas Drayton from Barbados in 1671. It includes the country's oldest colonial estate garden where color may be seen year-round. The Plantation House dates from the Reconstruction era and is open for tours. The garden also features the Barbadoes Tropical Garden, a petting zoo and miniature horse ranch, a 125-acre waterfowl refuge, rental bikes and canoes, an 18th-century herb garden, a Biblical garden, topiary garden and horticultural maze.

Middleton Place House Museum
c. 1755, offers a history of the renowned Middleton family from 1741 through 1865, along with exhibits of priceless silver, china, furniture and artwork. On a busy day in the plantation stableyards, a visitor can see demonstrations by the blacksmith, potter, weaver and carpenter.
