Class of 1967 at CRHS (now CRB, of course!):
Since you are holding your big "40" reunion in June, and we are holding our big "50" reunion in Aug, we'd like to send you a challenge - for a very good cause.
The Jan 25, 2007, issue of the Coon Rapids Enterprise has a front page article about the Coon Rapids Library needing a Technology Fund to provide upgrades and replacements for the computers in the Library - at the very time when funding is being cut back by their tax collecting benefactors. I have contacted the Library and the Coon Rapids Enterprise, and they are very supportive of a Challenge among our classes that are having reunions this year.
I would like to see us set a goal of each class raising at least $1,000 by Labor Day for the Technology Fund of the "Friends of the Library."
I assume we can also involve some of the other classes, celebrating 10, 15, 25, 30, etc., years this year as well, as well as others, perhaps. If we could raise $1,000 from six classes, this would replace one of the funding losses. Just 10 donations of $100 – or 20 of $50 – or 50 of $20!!
I would further suggest that the funds be earmarked for computer replacements, primarily, which would provide a "several years" life to the donations.
Mark Payment for Class of 19XX Challenge Donation to Technology Fund.
Charles Carpenter is the president of the Friends of the Library.
All funds are payable to:

School Library Donation Information:
After some of us began talking about a donation to assist the City Library, Ruth let us know that the School Library Book Fund was always small, also. So here is that information:
I'm excited!!!! Let's see if we can make a difference in the lives of the young people attending our alma mater!!! Donations should be made payable to "Coon Rapids Bayard Educational Corporation" and sent to Coon Rapids-Bayard School District , Attn. Gail Hopkins, 905 North Street, P. O. Box 297 , Coon Rapids , Iowa 50058 . Please tag your donations with your class year. Please feel free to pass this (message) along to other classmates.
Ruth ( Anderson ) Jensen
Here's the scoop!! I contacted Supt. Rich Stoffers and Prin. Shawn Zanders about my suggestion to give our alumni donations to our local school district especially the school library. Supt. Stoffers' reply included these ideas:
Ruth,
Thanks for getting in touch with the administrative team about some of your '57 classmates' willingness to support/fund community or school programs. Your efforts to re-direct some very noteworthy and very charitable intentions by your classmates is very much appreciated. Library book funding is no doubt a good idea, but there are other possible educational targets for funding. By the way, the Foundation (Coon Rapids Bayard Educational Corporation) has established a 501c3 status as a charitable organization.
In visiting with SZ, there is no question that some "big time" funds are immediately needed for K-12 technology upgrades. We have needs in the library/media center, business lab, and computer labs throughout the district. This is of major concern and an improvement in this area would benefit all our students.
The auditorium renovation is another wonderful opportunity for someone or a group to put their name on the project. The difference being; at some point we will have PPEL/Levy funding to do that, while our technology funds are very much limited, and fall typically under General Fund category, which as you know are becoming more and more scarce due to declining enrollment.
Keep up your efforts to inform your alumni about the importance of supporting our school district through our district's foundation. Also, as a school, if we can help out in anyway, and get involved as a school district and community with your reunion; we'd love to do that. Anyway we would be able to support your reunion just let us know.
Thanks so much!
Rich Stoffers

Norman Arrowsmith, 35, passed away Monday evening, Feb. 18, at Sacramento, Calif. He was a former Coon Rapids resident and the son of Mrs. Addie Arrowsmith.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Feb. 23, at 3 p.m. at the United Methodist Church with the Rev. Alfred E. Rau officiating. Interment will be in Highland Cemetery near Baryard, under the direction of Mason Funeral Home.
Norman was born October 28, 1938 near Bayard, the son of Charlie and Addie Arrowsmith. He attended school at Bayard and Coon Rapids.
Survivors include his mother and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Opal Visner, Lake City; Charles of Bagley; Mrs. Irene Fick and Howard, Coon Rapids; Mrs. Ross (Audrey) Coglia, Sacramento, CA; Gerald of Council Bluffs; Harlod of Minok, Ill.; John of Bayard; Donald of Orient; Lee of Decorah; Mrs. Bob (Gloria) Burns, Sacramento, CA; Joe of San Jose, Calif.
His father preceded him in death.
The community was shocked and saddened last Friday morning when word was received that Marcia Textor Leary, 33, had been killed Thursday night when a car in which she was riding collided with a truck in Nashville, Tenn., where she lived.
Mrs. Leary was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Textor of Coon Rapids and a 1957 graduate of Coon Rapids High School.
Mr. and Mrs. Leary and another couple had opened The Way Home, a residence for homeless children, last September in Nashville. The driver of the car in which she was riding was a 17-year-old boy who lived at the home. He survived the crash. He apparently failed to yield the right-of-way to a two-ton truck after making a left turn. He had recently received his driver's license.
Memorial services were held Saturday afternoon in the Donelson View Baptist Church. Burial was in the Woodlawn Memorial Park. Donelson is a suburb of Nashville.
Obituary - Marcia Textor Leary
From Coon Rapids Enterprise, Thursday, May 25, 1972
Marcia Textor Leary was born in Madison, Wisc., on Feb 5, 1939, the daughter of Oliver and Anne Churchill Textor. She spent most of her childhood in Coon Rapids, attending the Coon Rapids Community School and graduated with the Class of 1957.
Choosing a nursing career, she attended the Methodist School of Nursing in Omaha, Nebr., graduating in 1960.
The next few years she worked putting herself through Baptist Bible Seminary at Johnson City, New York, graduating with a degree in Religion in 1964. She became absorbed in Christian oriented work and spent much of her spare time working with a non-denominational group "The Navigators" helping at conferences and other phases of their ministry.
Her marriage to Kenneth Leary took place Dec. 18, 1966, in Washington, D.C. To this union was born one daughter, Melinda Sue, now 2 1/2 years old.
The Learys lived and worked at Cal Farley's Boys Ranch located near Amarillo, Texas, from January until July in 1971. Working with the boys gave them the desire to start a home for children from broken homes.
This dream was shared by another couple working at the ranch who were natives of Nashville, Tenn. In July they went to Nashville and by September 1 "The Way Home" was a reality for them. It is supported by donations and the family will forward memorials or they can be sent directly to The Way Home, 215 Blanton Ave., Nashville, Tenn., 37210.
Marcia leaves her husband, Kenneth E. Leary, her daughter, Melinda Sue of Nashville; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. H. Textor of Coon Rapids; one sister, Mrs. Monte (Sue) Carl of Omaha, Nebr.; one brother, Mark Textor of Nashville; the foster children at the home; her grandmother, Mrs. Grace Churchill of Coon Rapids; many other relatives and friends.
She belonged to the Donelson View Baptist Church where memorial services were conducted May 20 at 3 p.m. with the Rev. Bruce Grubbs officiating. Cliff Frensley was solist.
Relatives attending the service were Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Conlon (she is the former Judy Grettenberg) of Ft. Campbell, Ky., Mrs. Monte Carl of Omaha, Nebr., Mr. and Mrs. O.H. Textor of Coon Rapids and Mark Textor of Nashville.
