My next horse will probably be a Standardbred. I'm satisfied with the Tennessee Walker that I'm driving now but I really don't want to start from scratch with a young horse again. I figure your halfway there when you start driving with a retired Standa dbred.

Great to learn of someone who is actively seeking out these horses and looking after them. It has always struck me as hypocritical that racehorse owners are most eager to accept the prizemoney that their horse earns but then are so quick to get rid of the animal when the earning capacity diminishes. May God continue to bless you in your vocation. ps (1)If I remember correctly "The Sandstorm"'s sire is Armbro Hurricane and I have another of his sons "Hurricane Fury" (won 19 races, now 18 years of age) who is enjoying retirement on 100 acres at a friend's property near Byron Bay. (2) Keep on saving them! We need a lot more like you.

My standard bred was broken to riding about 6 months ago. She has a terrific nature and is very quick. At present we are teaching her to do Pony Club games, and she is adapting well, and has plenty of speed over short distances. I would recommend a Standa bred to anyone.

Hello! My husband is the one that is into the Standardbreds! We have a mare that we retired off the track called Soft Sense that came from Walnut Hall Farm in Ohio. She just had a beautiful correct foal this year by Armbro Getty. Have not decided to keep he filly or have her trained for racing. He name is L B Soft Flight. I am the one that is into the Miniature horses but have to admit my husband like the little ones also. I sucessfully show and breed Miniatures. Pleased to meet you!

Hello Congratulations on your informative page. I am glad that more and more people are finding out that Standardbreds really are adaptable and can give people pleasure after their racing days are over. There are a lot of folks who come to my little chat room t at ride and drive ex racers. I wish there wasn't such a big time difference between Canada and Australia as I'm sure you would enjoy chatting with them. Keep up the good work and all the best to you and your horses!

I have owned a STB mare for eight years. She is such a pleasure to ride and drive that I am now looking for another STB. My grandfather trained and drove STB's in the US back in the 1940's and 1950's. I didn't know there were STB harness race in Australia I enjoyed your web page. Thanks for E- mailing me the SPHO info. Nice to make contact with STB owners in other countries.

Laura says: There sure is heaps of harness racing here in Australia. Of note there are The miracle Mile and also the Inter Dominion which we share with New Zealand. There is als things like The Sires Stakes, Australian Pacing Gold and many other major races held by specific tracks.

Laura says: I am going to get some pictures up soon. I just have to gain access to a scanner. I should be getting a background up very soon.

Hi Laura,
Tried to sign this before but it went somewhere else because of these proxy servers my provider makes us use...grrrr. Anyway, I basically said that it's cool to see that someone is looking after some of these wonderful horses after their racing days are one. Good luck in the comps and stuff!
Andy.

Laura says: Thanks. I rather like it when we beat them too. In fact,I bought a NZ horse just the other day. The Sand Storm. You may have heard of him? Apparently he won about $62 000. Then of course he was going to the dogs but he's mine now.

My family's had trotters & pacers all my life and so I've always ridden them as a bit of variety in their routine. I have started training my own in the last few years and my first horse Vincentio (stable name Axelby) was retired after developing a bad rack in his hoof. He's now loving life with one of my former workmates and I believe he's about to start endurance rides. I hope more people start to understand how wonderful most Standardbreds are and giving them a future after racing.

I really enjoyed your page, sounds like you have done wonders with your two boys! My first horse was a Standardbred named High On Andy, bought him as a 3 yr. old, not broke to ride. He was quite the "project" - unfortunately, a classic klutz, and went f om one pasture injury to another, usually at least one a year (in pastures with other horses - he would be the *only* one injured, obviously a creative sort!), and ultimately was too unsound to continue being ridden at all. I sold him as a pet to a girl earby, still miss him! If you get the chance, please do drop by my website and check it out! Take care! :)

I love your homepage! It's very interesting. Now I already know a bit more about them. How fast is pacing? How fast can a horse go on a short distance? I like how you wrote a descreiption of each horse and how much it cost. Now I'm tempted that if I ever buy a horse, it'll be a Standardbred. Except maybe for the pacing.

Laura says: I will put up a section of interesting facts about the STB soon. I just have to finish collecting them. Most STB's will cease pacing after they come off t e track and stop having too. However, they never forget how and when they are hurt or tired they sometimes lapse back into pacing. Some horses are natural pacers and they will not change their gait. These horses are usually bred from anyway. Perhaps y u could get a STB from the yearling sales before they are gaited (trained to pace) and then you wouldn't have any problems
