This page is dedicated to Dark Shadows fans everywhere.
Dark Shadows began in 1966. The underlying theme of the series was the love of the tormented vampire, Barnabas Collins (Jonathan Frid), for Josette Dupres (Kathryn Lee Scott). Barnabas is thwarted throughout time by the witch Angelique (Lara Parker). The storyline encompasses not only the present time of the twentieth century, but also sweeps viewers into the Collinwood of 1795, 1840, 1897, as well as parallel times. The writers frequently drew upon the classics for their plots, and well-read Dark Shadows fans will recognize such beloved stories as Rebecca, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Wuthering Heights, The Turn of the Screw, and others.
Dark Shadows ran for more than 1200 episodes until its cancellation in 1971. Twenty years later the series was revived on NBC's primetime mid-season lineup. Starring such well-known actors as Ben Cross (Barnabas), and Jean Simmons (Elizabeth), the series quickly attracted fans both old and new. Unfortunately, the series lasted only one season, and those who were new to the show were left wondering what would become of Victoria and Barnabas.
The SciFi Channel is once again airing Dark Shadows. My girls and I have missed hurrying home from school to watch the latest episodes, just as I did when I was their age. I'm glad we get the chance again!
