Manchayil Family Association.

(Olassa P.O. Kottayam Dist. Kerala-686014.)

In modern days almost all Christian families in Kerala try to trace back their history and print them as "A Family History'. This tendency has recently grown to such an extent that it has become a status symbol for a family.

Manchayil family also has a history book known by the name "Cholappallil Kudumba Charitram" in Malayalam (page 634) in which the branching of the manchayil family is described in pages 167 to 168. This is just an attempt to bring to limelight the ancient history of the Manchayil family to a large number of its members, who are ignorant of its glorious past.

It is an acknowledged historical fact that St. Thomas one among the tweleve disciplesof Jesus Christ came to India in A.D. 52. He landed first at Kodungalore and began preaching and converting people into Christianity. In the begining four bramin families namely Pakalomattom, Sankarapuri, Kali, & Kalikau were converted. Members of these families were baptised by St.Thomas at Paliyoor near Kodungalloore.

Among these, Sankarapuri was our ancested family. In a course of time the family turned into many branches and spread into different parts of the country. One of them was known by the name "Cholappallil Kudumbam". During the next three centuries the family was scattered in different parts of the vadakumkoor Kingdom. One of these branches settled down in Aruvithara in A.D. 900. It preserved its ancient name. Later some of its members went to Vallachira and settled there. Around 200 years later a branch of this family migrated to Ramapuram near Palai and settled there in A.D. 1340 and the family was known as Cholappally.

Later, one branche of the Cholappally family migrated to Nattassery Parampuzha area in the north of Kottayam in 1700. A branch of this was later known as "Irubanam" family. After about hundred years a branch of Irubanam family went to Kummanam the west of Kottyam and settled there by the name "Perumchira family" in A.D. 1850. After 50 years, one member of the following generation Mr. Mathu went to Olassa the norst west of Kottayam and settled there by the name of "Vadekkekunninpram". The grandson of Mathu named Thomman moved to Aymanam and settled there in a plot called "Mazhuvanchery Mana" which was later shortened as "Manchayil". He was the ancestor who thus founded the Mancha Family". Thomman Manchayil was a vydhan and he was better known as "Manchayil Thomman Vydhan".

The founder president was Dr. John Mancha and founder secretary was Mr. Rajan Mancha. The present President is Mr. M.A. George,Manchayil Chittacheril, Treasurer is Mr. John Thomas,Manchayil kunninpurathu, Secretary is Dr. Thomas Mancha, Manchayil and Our patron is Mr. M.K. Philiph(Edakkattil) the eldest member of the family. Today Manchayil Kudumba Yogam has grown to a sixty five family group. The President, Secretary and Treasurer and the executive members change every year. We have an annual gathering every year ie. during the last sunday of the year. It is normally conducted each year at any one of our family residences.

The Kudumba Yogam is looks after the welfare of the members of the family. It has a welfare fund to finance those who are in need, especially for education, medical-aid and marriage. A caring, sharing, loving attitude in our motto. The Kudumba Yogam is a source of unity, integrity, understanding and love.

Over and above the material welfare of our member, we are also look into the spiritual enrichment of every one in our large family. I do hope and pray that each head of every house in our family could say with Joshua "For me and my house, we will serve the Lord".

It is expected that this short sketch would give a little idea of the background of Manchayil family.

[Here I express my sincere gratitude to Dr. Thomas Mancha who helped me to make this information in this form.]
