Once there was a great cat. His fur was shining jet black, his
eyes bright yellow balls of fire, and his whiskers, long thin threads
accentuating his face. His body was as long as a tree branch with short
legs. He had small, shining white teeth, claws sharp as knives. A long
winding rope was his tail, twisting and turning to express his emotions.
His name was Ebony. He lived with his wife, a pure white cat.
One day his wife gave birth to three kittens, one calico female,
one orange tabby male, and one shining silver longhair male. Ebony and
his family lived happily in the great paradise in the sky. They had a
beautiful palace full of soft cusions, with sweet honeysuckle on the
walls, and burning candles of catnip incense. The fiels around the palace
were full of birds and mice to chase and hunt, and even a pond of fish.
It was a life of bliss and luxury.
At first the kittens romped all day, sleeping soundly in the
night, and exploring the paradise. However, as the kittens grew older,
they had been all around their home surroundings. Soon they grew weary of
always being in the same place, and wished for something new to fill
their curiosities.
The kittens went to Ebony. "Father," said Hue, the calico, "this
place bores us. We wish for something more."
"Yes, Father," continued Patina, the silver, "we wish to go
somewhere else."
"Children, I would like to help you, but there is no other place
to go. We are all there is in the world," answerd Ebony.
"But," Garlans, the tabby, said, "you are the great cat. You may
do anything."
"Son, you are right. I will help you." So Ebony went to his box,
for even then cats had boxes, the use of which need not be described. He
took a bit of clay from it, and threw it from the sky paradise, and
rubbed it with his soft, round paw, creating a new land. Where his claws
scratched became deep valleys, clay piled up forming mountains.
He finished it and turned to his kittens. "Here, children, is a
new world for your enjoyment. I call it Earth."
So his kittens jumped down to play and explore the new world.
However, they soon grew bored once again. They traveled to their to ask
for something more exciting.
Hue voiced their request. "Up here you have many animals to keep
you amused. We are the only ones below on the Earth. Please, would you
make us some animals for excitement and enjoyment?
"Of course. Go back to the Earth and soon I will bring you some
new creatures." Ebony replied.
Ebony began to groom himself, and several hairs fell out. He
touched one with his rough tongue, and they each became an animal. A
tiny, dirty hair from his backside became a dog, the great evil of the
cat. From one whisker, he created humans.
He traveled to earth, and showed the new creatures to his
children. "You must watch over these animals," he told them, "but they
are at your discretion. You mat hunt them, or anything else you like, as
long as you leave a few of each."
He then showed them the humans. "These too you must watch over.
However, they are wiser than others, although not as wise as us. Some
time in the future, they will believe they are the most powerful
creatures. You must stay with them always, and make sure they know that
there is someone more powerful, the cats."
The kittens rule wisely, hunting only when it was necessary. When
they caught a creature, its soul rose to the sky, and this is death. In
the sky, they live in the paradise with ebony and his wife, except for
dogs, who must go to the underworld.
Ebony watched over the kittens in the day, and the sun is his
bright yellow eyes. Their mother gazed at them during the night. The moon
is her white fur; each night she changes her position and creates the
phases of the moon. The dogs know the moon is a cat, so they howl all
night in wont of catching her.
That is how it is to this day. From the kittens came all cats,
big ones such as lions as well as small ones. They live with humans to
keep an eye on them. Whenever humans begin to think they are the wonder
of the living world, one of the cats simply comes forward to show who is
the real master, the cats.
