Biography:
 
 Andrew J. Masters enlisted in Co. D, 77th Ohio Regiment Infantry on 8 Nov. 1861 and was discharged 19 Dec. 1863, but enlisted again at Little Rock, AR on 20 Dec. 1863 for three more years.  His rank was Pvt. and his assignment was a cook.  He was captured at Marks Mill, AR and was taken to Camp Ford, TX where he contracted a disease of the eyes called scury which resulted in the loss of eyesight in one eye.  He also contracted a gum disease and lost his teeth.  He was discharged for the second time on 8 Mar. 1866 and moved to Bloomfield, Green Co. IN where he is on the 1870 US census.  [NOTE:  His military record is printed in MASTERS, by Erma Lee Masters & others].  The family moved to Yell County AR before 1880 where they are listed on the 1880 Yell Co. AR census. He patented 160 acres of land in Yell county, described as the SE 1/4, Section 11, Township 4N, Range 25W, which is near Waldron, AR. In the North West, part of the county and near a community called Waltreak, AR. Andrew J. Masters died before the patent was completed, but his wife received homestead certificate #8328, recorded in Misc. Vol. 668, page 462 in the Court House at Danville, Yell Co. AR.  Their oldest son Samuel Alex lived in Dardanelle and was a builder and contractor, built caskets for a caskets company , Texankana Texas then he later bought them out and started a Funeral business then bought out the only other one in town, then it was Masters Funeral Home, until Samuel's death, then a daughter ran it , Its name was changed to Cornwell Funeral Home, that was her married name. It now has 2 one in Danville and the one here in Dardanelle, it is still in the family. [ June 1998 ].
