Biography:
Benjamin Masters served in the Revolutionary War  (Record Cert. # 328, Voucher # 161, Sussex County, Militia) until 1 May 1784, in Joseph Gaston & Capt. Hill's Co's as a Pvt.

In 1781, Benjamin's father William Sr. and probably all of his brothers moved to Washington and Bedford Counties in PA. Benjamin remained in New Jersey.  He was still in NJ. when brothers, William Jr. and Richard returned to dispose of their father's property in 1792.  Benjamin, Richard and William Jr. were all on the 1793 Sussex Co. NJ Military Census.  Benjamin joined his brother Richard in a move to Ohio, in 1802-4.

According to OHIO RECORDS & PIONEER FAMILIES, V. IX. p. 36, Benjamin moved from Sussex Co. NJ, to Oxford Twp. Guernsey Co, OH in 1802, he settled in a location 3 miles north of Zane's Trace ...he moved to the center of the farm and built a log house.

In 1823, Benjamin moved to Marion Co. OH and settled in a cabin in Tully Twp. the area was thinly populated and woves killed all his sheep, even though they were in a pen beside the cabin, so he moved back to Guernsey Co. He later returned to Marion Co.

By 1827 , it became obvious to Benjamin that Zanes Trace ( a wilderness trail) would be built between Wheeling, West Virginia, and Zansville, OH.  Benjamin secured land about midway between Zansville and Wheeling and laid out a town of Middlebourne or Middletown.

After the children were grown Benjamin placed his Guernsey OH property iln a trust and made his son Thomas executor. Benjamin and wife Catherine moved to Marion Co. Oh where he died in July, 1835.

The 1850 census shows Catherine Masters, widow age 64, Benjamin, age 24, farmer, Mary Ann, age22, George, age 20, farmer, and her motherless granddaughters: Catherine Masters, age 4, and Sarah Rake age 5,.
