CALVIN One of the main stars of the strip, along with Hobbes. He is 6 years old, has an extremely overactive imagination, and a lot of questions he wants answered. He was named after John Calvin, a Protestant Reformer. No, he is not the child of Bill Watterson, the author, nor is he anything like Watterson was as a child.

HOBBES Calvin's stuffed tiger and best friend. Although he is stuffed, to Calvin he is very real. Hobbes was named after a 17^th century philosopher, who also had great insight, like Hobbes. Hobbes was inspired by Watterson's gray tabby cat named Spike.

 

CALVIN'S DAD His job is a lawyer, but he can't win at home. Calvin is always taking opinion polls in which Dad invariably loses points in. Much of Calvin's Dad is part Watterson and part Watterson's own father. Whenever Calvin's dad is imparting character building wisdom it is most likely based on Watterson's Dad.

 

CALVIN'S MOM What can you say, she is a MOM! Loves Calvin, but is often exasperated by his antics.

ROSALYN Calvin's babysitter. She is on to every one of Calvin's tricks, and is usually one step ahead. Calvin is terrified of her. Rosalyn started out as a bit player in Watterson's strips, but he liked the way they meshed and incorporated her into more of his comics.

SUSIE Calvin's neighbor and "girlfriend"?. It is a sort of love/hate relationship between them, as Calvin 'hates' girls, as any self-respecting 6 year old would. His club G.R.O.S.S. is dedicated to hating girls.

 

Mrs. Wormwood Calvin's school teacher. Named after the apprentice in C.S. Lewis's 'The Screwtape Letters'. Takes her job seriously as educator of young minds but it is well known that she smokes to much and is on medication.

 

Moe School bully, dunce, and all around jerk. We all knew someone like him in school. Even Calvin knows you don't mess around with a grade-schooler that shaves!
