Mrs. Ada Pegram - Dies Last Night (2 Aug 1969)

Mrs. Ada Mayo Pegram died late last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charlie Clark, in Raleigh. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o’clock from the First United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Kelly Wilson. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery. The family will be at the home of Mrs. E. G. Hudnell at Chocowinity.

Mrs. Pegram was born April 20, 1890 in Beaufort County, daughter of the late Lacy R. Mayo and Dorcas Elizabeth Potter Mayo. She spent her lifetime in this area. Mrs. Pegram was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Woman’s Society of Christian service. Her husband, Samuel C. Pegram, died March 19, 1966.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Charlie Clark of Raleigh and Mrs. John f. Griffin, Jr., of Rocky Mount; one son, Samuel C. Pegram, Jr., of Dallie Jo,Calif.; two brothers, Sam N. Mayo of Richmond, Va. and John B. Mayo of Raleigh; and one niece Mrs. David Ferrell of Hampton, Va., six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. (From WDN 2 Aug 1969)



Mrs. Ida S. Pegram - Dies Wednesday (31 Jan 1969)

Mrs. Ida Shavender Pegram, age 74, of Burlington and formerly of Beaufort County died Wednesday in the Thomasville General hospital. Mrs. Pegram was the daughter of the late John B. and Gertrude Weston Shavender and widow of Rev. Chauncey M. Shavender who died in 1968.

Surviving included one daughter, Mrs. Daphne P. Ross of Burlington; three sons, John J. Pegram of Garner, Chauncey M. Pegram. Jr. of High Point , William Ruffin Pegram of Thailand; one sister, Mrs. Louise Shavender Ricks of Pantego;10 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 10:00 a.m. from the Front Street United Methodist Church in Burlington by the Rev. M. W. Lawrence. A second service will be conducted Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Washington at the First United Methodist Church by the Rev. M. W. Lawrence with burial to follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Rev. Chauncey Pegram - Pegram Funeral Slated Saturday (12 Apr 1968)

Funeral services for the Rev. Chauncey Pegram, native of Bath and former pastor of the Burlington Baptist Church, Will be held Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in Thomasville A memorial service will be held at the First Methodist Church here at 4 p.m., conducted by the Rev. Kelly Wilson, Pastor. Burial will follow in Oakdale Cemetery.

Mr. Pegram died early Thursday in Alanance Hospital in Burlington. Surviving are his wife Ida former Ida Shavender of Pantego; three sons and one daughter. (From WDN – 12 Apr 1968)



David Pegram – Dies in Hyde–Swan Quarter(5 Apr 1971)


David C. Pegram, age 76, died here at his home Saturday. Mr. Pegram was retired.

Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Swan Quarter Baptist church, with rev. Don Smith officiating Burial followed in Soule Cemetery.

Surviving is his wife. Mrs. Virginia Cuthrell Pegram; four sons, Edward Pegram of Swan Quarter, David C. Pegram, Jr. of Anderson, SC, Lemlmie Pegram of Elizabeth City and Marvin Pegram of San Jose, Calif.,; three daughters, Mrs. Pearl Mariner of Elizabeth City, Mrs. Hazel Byrum of Hertford, and Mrs. Betty Sadler of Swan Quarter; three sisters, Mrs. Aileen Sawyer of Scranton, Mrs. Mattie Blake of Elizabeth City, and Mrs. Patsy O’Neal of Ponzer; one brother Sam Sadler of Scranton; 25 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Cary Sadler, Willie Sadler, Edward Lee Sadler, Billy Harrell and Joe Saunders. (From WDN 5 Apr 1971)



J. A. Pegram - Reidsville Officer Killed When He Fell From Moving Machine Reidsville, NC Nov. 1 ----

J. A. Pegram, Rockinham County Deputy Sheriff, was almost instantly killed about 11:30 o’clock last night three miles cast of Reidsville when he stepped from a moving automobile driven by a fellow officer.

Hurled to the road with terrific force, Pegram sustained a fracture of the skull. He died a few minutes later. According to Sheriff T. L. Gardner, the two officers were out policing the Lawsonville road, having been informed that several occupants of a car were riding up and down the road drinking. (From the WDN No Date)



Johnnie Pegram Dies This Morning (10 Oct 1955)

Johnnie Pegram, age 90 years, died suddenly of a heart attack at his home, 221 Telfair Street, at 9 o’clock this morning while sawing wood. Mr. Pegram was born in Hyde County, June 22 1865, and was a retired farmer. He was a member of the St. Claire Christian Church of Ransomville. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Cora Midyette of this city 14 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held from the graveside in the Baptist Church Cemetery in Ransomville, conducted by the Rev. Purnell Gallop, his pastor. Interment will be in the Baptist Cemetery. (From WDN 10 Oct 1955)



Joseph Mann Pegram,Jr. – Bayboro (7 May 1982)

Joseph Mann Pegram, Jr., died Thursday at his home. He was 66. Funeral services are 2 p.m. Saturday from Bethel FWB Church, Whartonsville, Revs. Blaney Rowe and Jessie Taylor officiating. Burial church cemetery.

Surviving: daughter Mary P. Humphrey of Brunswick: Mother Mary Ellen Roscoe Pegram of Bayboro; brothers William and Russell W. Pegram of Bayboro, and Robert E. and Elmmo E. Pegram of Arapahoe; sisters Ruth Stephenson of Arapahoe; Mary Jarvis of Reelsboro, Emma Armstrong of Grantsboro, Blanch Griggs of Vandermeer, and Edith Woolard of Washington; and five grandchildren.

Mrs. Lizzie Pegram - Of Bath RFD Dies (29 Mar 1948)

Mrs. Lizzie Pegram 65, of Bath, RD died Sunday night at the home of her daughter Mrs. Arthur Credle. She had been in failing heath for several months. She was a member of the St. Claire Christian Church.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Arthur Credle, Bath RFD, and one brother, J. H. Hawkins, of Washington, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from St. Clair’s Christian Church by the Rev, Henry Speight, of Greenville. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Samuel C. Pegram - Dies Early Today (19 Mar 1966)

Samuel C. Pegram, resident of 109 N. Brown Street, passed away in a Raleigh hospital early Saturday morning. He had been in failing health for about two years. Mr. Pegram, son of the late Rev. Jacob R. and Willie Mason Pegram, was born at Mackeys, NC Dec. 29, 1885. He was married to the former Ada Mayo of Campbell’s Creek who survives. They spent most of their married life in Washington and he was associated with the First National Bank for several years and later with Von Eberstein and Pegram Co. until he retired several years ago.

Mr. Pegram was a member of the First Methodist Church and the Men’s Bible class of the church, Orr Lodge, No. 104 A.F. & A.M., Washington York Rite Masonic bodies and Susan Temple Nobels of the Mystic Shrine. Surviving with his wife are one son, Samuel C. Pegram, Jr., of Richmond, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy P. Clark of Raleigh and Mrs. Eunice P. Griffen of Rocky Mount; one brother Chancey Pegram of Thomasville, and six grandchildren and the and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist Church Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock with Rev. T. J. Whitehead officiating Burial will be conducted by Orr Lodge at the graveside. Serving as active pallbearers will be: Melvin Whethon, H. Reid Mitchell. Jr., B. J. Scott, J. D. Snuggs, Lee B. Wyn—and Blake C. Lewis Orr, Lodge will open at 2:00 p.m. for the purpose of conterting Masonic rites. The body will --- -- the Oders; Funeral --- --- the Funeral home. Virginia C. Pegram - Swan Quarter (25 Feb 1990)

Virginia Cutrell Pegram, 85, died yesterday in Guardian Care Nursing Home, Elizabeth City.

Funeral service will be 3 p.m. tomorrow in Swan Quarter Baptist Church with the Rev. John Rowland officiating. Burial will be in the Soule Cemetery.

A native of Hyde County, Mrs. Pegram was a member of Swan Quarter Baptist Church and had lived in Elizabeth City for the last five years. Surviving are two sons, David Pegram Jr. and Honera Path, SC, and Marvin Pegram of Livermore, Calif.; a daughter, Betty P. Sadler of Swan Quarter, 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. And Mrs. Larry Sadler in Swan Quarter. Arrangements are by Bryan Funeral Service. (This was taken from WDN 25 Feb 1990)



Guardsmen Find Overton’s Body - Bath Man Drowned When He Fell From Oyster Sailing Boat Tuesday (7 Nov 1941)

The body of Willie Overton, 28, of near Bath, who drowned Tuesday afternoon when he fell from an oyster sailing boat off Shell Point I the sound, was recovered yesterday afternoon. It was about 3:45 by guardsmen aboard. The Coast Guard Cutter Pamlico who were called late Wednesday night to assist in the search.

The body was first taken to Swan Quarter where the coroner, C. P. Williams, was reported to have found death most probably caused by having been knocked overboard by the boom of the boat. Following the coroner’s report the remains were taken to the Bishop Funeral Home in Belhaven.

Mr. Overton was a son of Mrs. Lizzie Pegram and the late Jim Overton, of Bath, R. F. D. He had been engaged in the oyster business with Ott Jordan, of Bath, by whom he was employed at the time of the tragedy. In addition to his mother he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Clifton Credle, of Bath. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 4 o’clock from the graveside in the North Creek Church Cemetery near Ransomville, with the Rev. Mackie officiating. (From WDN Nov 7,1941)



Last Rites Held Mrs. Cartwright (6 May 1940)

Mother of Sam C. PegramOf This City Passes at 81, After Short Illness. Last rites were held this afternoon at 3 o’clock from the First Methodist Church for Mrs. Willie S. Cartwright, 81, who died Sunday at the home of her son,Sam C. Pegram,with whom she had resided for the past six years, after an illness of six days. The services were conducted by the Rev. L. B. Jones, pastor of the Methodist Church, and burial was in Oakdale Cemetery.

Mrs. Cartwright before marriage was Miss Willie Mason, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Mason, of Washington County, where she was born and spent her early life. She was twice married, first to the late J. Y. Pegram, and second to J. R. Cartwright, of Bath, who preceded her in death six years ago. Since that time she has resided in Washington with her son and during those years has made a wide circle of friends and admirers. Mrs. Cartwight had spent the greater portion of her life in Beaufort County and for many years was a member of the Methodist Church.

Surviving are two sons,Sam C. Pegram of this city and the Rev. C. M. Pegram, of Raleigh; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Active pallbearers for this afternoon’s service were: G. Latham, Frank Millar, Jr., R. S. Silverthorne, Lee Wynne, M. F. McKeel, Jr., and C. O. Jordan. Honorary pallbearers were Z. N. Leggett, E. R. Mixon, Roy Mayo, Dr. L. H. Swindell, E. P. Rhodes, C. G. Morris, F. W. Ayers, Dr. M. O. Fletcher, Thad Hodges, Charles L. Wright, G. E. Bell, H. C. Harrison, S. L. Snell, Paul Nance, Bill Peele, W.
