Pegram Obituaries
Mrs. Pegram was born April 20, 1890 in Beaufort County, daughter of the late Lacy R. Mayo and Dorcas Elizabeth Potter Mayo. She spent her lifetime in this area. Mrs. Pegram was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Woman’s Society of Christian service. Her husband, Samuel C. Pegram, died March 19, 1966.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Charlie Clark of Raleigh and Mrs. John f. Griffin, Jr., of Rocky Mount; one son, Samuel C. Pegram, Jr., of Dallie Jo,Calif.; two brothers, Sam N. Mayo of Richmond, Va. and John B. Mayo of Raleigh; and one niece Mrs. David Ferrell of Hampton, Va., six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. (From WDN 2 Aug 1969)
Surviving included one daughter, Mrs. Daphne P. Ross of Burlington; three sons, John J. Pegram of Garner, Chauncey M. Pegram. Jr. of High Point , William Ruffin Pegram of Thailand; one sister, Mrs. Louise Shavender Ricks of Pantego;10 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Saturday at 10:00 a.m. from the Front Street United Methodist Church in Burlington by the Rev. M. W. Lawrence. A second service will be conducted Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Washington at the First United Methodist Church by the Rev. M. W. Lawrence with burial to follow in Oakdale Cemetery. Mr. Pegram died early Thursday in Alanance Hospital in Burlington. Surviving are his wife Ida former Ida Shavender of Pantego; three sons and one daughter. (From WDN – 12 Apr 1968)
David C. Pegram, age 76, died here at his home Saturday. Mr. Pegram was retired.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Swan Quarter Baptist church, with rev. Don Smith officiating Burial followed in Soule Cemetery.
Surviving is his wife. Mrs. Virginia Cuthrell Pegram; four sons, Edward Pegram of Swan Quarter, David C. Pegram, Jr. of Anderson, SC, Lemlmie Pegram of Elizabeth City and Marvin Pegram of San Jose, Calif.,; three daughters, Mrs. Pearl Mariner of Elizabeth City, Mrs. Hazel Byrum of Hertford, and Mrs. Betty Sadler of Swan Quarter; three sisters, Mrs. Aileen Sawyer of Scranton, Mrs. Mattie Blake of Elizabeth City, and Mrs. Patsy O’Neal of Ponzer; one brother Sam Sadler of Scranton; 25 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Cary Sadler, Willie Sadler, Edward Lee Sadler, Billy Harrell and Joe Saunders. (From WDN 5 Apr 1971)
Hurled to the road with terrific force, Pegram sustained a fracture of the skull. He died a few minutes later. According to Sheriff T. L. Gardner, the two officers were out policing the Lawsonville road, having been informed that several occupants of a car were riding up and down the road drinking. (From the WDN No Date)

Surviving: daughter Mary P. Humphrey of Brunswick: Mother Mary Ellen Roscoe Pegram of Bayboro; brothers William and Russell W. Pegram of Bayboro, and Robert E. and Elmmo E. Pegram of Arapahoe; sisters Ruth Stephenson of Arapahoe; Mary Jarvis of Reelsboro, Emma Armstrong of Grantsboro, Blanch Griggs of Vandermeer, and Edith Woolard of Washington; and five grandchildren.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Arthur Credle, Bath RFD, and one brother, J. H. Hawkins, of Washington, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday afternoon at 2 o’clock from St. Clair’s Christian Church by the Rev, Henry Speight, of Greenville. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Pegram was a member of the First Methodist Church and the Men’s Bible class of the church, Orr Lodge, No. 104 A.F. & A.M., Washington York Rite Masonic bodies and Susan Temple Nobels of the Mystic Shrine. Surviving with his wife are one son, Samuel C. Pegram, Jr., of Richmond, Calif.; two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy P. Clark of Raleigh and Mrs. Eunice P. Griffen of Rocky Mount; one brother Chancey Pegram of Thomasville, and six grandchildren and the and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at the First Methodist Church Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o’clock with Rev. T. J. Whitehead officiating Burial will be conducted by Orr Lodge at the graveside. Serving as active pallbearers will be: Melvin Whethon, H. Reid Mitchell. Jr., B. J. Scott, J. D. Snuggs, Lee B. Wyn—and Blake C. Lewis Orr, Lodge will open at 2:00 p.m. for the purpose of conterting Masonic rites. The body will --- -- the Oders; Funeral --- --- the Funeral home. Funeral service will be 3 p.m. tomorrow in Swan Quarter Baptist Church with the Rev. John Rowland officiating. Burial will be in the Soule Cemetery.
A native of Hyde County, Mrs. Pegram was a member of Swan Quarter Baptist Church and had lived in Elizabeth City for the last five years. Surviving are two sons, David Pegram Jr. and Honera Path, SC, and Marvin Pegram of Livermore, Calif.; a daughter, Betty P. Sadler of Swan Quarter, 16 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

The body was first taken to Swan Quarter where the coroner, C. P. Williams, was reported to have found death most probably caused by having been knocked overboard by the boom of the boat. Following the coroner’s report the remains were taken to the Bishop Funeral Home in Belhaven.
Mr. Overton was a son of Mrs. Lizzie Pegram and the late Jim Overton, of Bath, R. F. D. He had been engaged in the oyster business with Ott Jordan, of Bath, by whom he was employed at the time of the tragedy. In addition to his mother he is survived by a sister, Mrs. Clifton Credle, of Bath. Funeral services were held this afternoon at 4 o’clock from the graveside in the North Creek Church Cemetery near Ransomville, with the Rev. Mackie officiating. (From WDN Nov 7,1941)
Mrs. Cartwright before marriage was Miss Willie Mason, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Mason, of Washington County, where she was born and spent her early life. She was twice married, first to the late J. Y. Pegram, and second to J. R. Cartwright, of Bath, who preceded her in death six years ago. Since that time she has resided in Washington with her son and during those years has made a wide circle of friends and admirers. Mrs. Cartwight had spent the greater portion of her life in Beaufort County and for many years was a member of the Methodist Church.
Surviving are two sons,Sam C. Pegram of this city and the Rev. C. M. Pegram, of Raleigh; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Active pallbearers for this afternoon’s service were: G. Latham, Frank Millar, Jr., R. S. Silverthorne, Lee Wynne, M. F. McKeel, Jr., and C. O. Jordan. Honorary pallbearers were Z. N. Leggett, E. R.
