A Shocking Suicide
John F. Rogers ends his life in a tragic matter. The most horrible case of suicide it has been. Our faith to chronicle is that of John Rogers a Portuguese residents of Old Gilroy. Who in a temporarily fit of insanity last Sunday morning slashed himself in the head four times with a axe and completed the work by cutting his throat from ear to ear with a pocket knife. Rogers had made perpetration to bring his family to church as was usual costum. He left his wife and family to dress themselves for church. Why he presumably was hitching up the horses instead he went to the granary and ended his life in the above manner. Mrs. Mary Rogers went in search for her husband and found him lying died in a pool of blood. The poor woman was horrified by finding the corpse of her husband who had left her but a few minutes previously apparently in good spirits.
Word was sent to town, and a City Marshall Rivers and Doctor Thyer went at once to the scene. Coroner Secord held an investigation and an inquest on Monday. The jury redeemed a verdict of suicide incongruous with the above facts.
