The Name Tyson
The name Tyson is one of those hereditary surnames with more than one meaning and origin. records indicate that the name comes from Northumberland, ENG and the English border counties near Scotland, Many of the family can be found buried in the church cemetery at Natland. where the name is found in Scotland, its history can be traced back to English origins.
Further research indicates the Tyson family is of Norman-French origin and came to ENG at the time of the Norman Conquest, settling in Kent and Sussex counties. The word “tison” is an Old French word meaning “firebrand”. In early French records the name is spelled “Tissent” and in some early English records is spelled “Tissient”.
A second source for the Tyson (Tison) surname indicates that it is a patronymic name. In this case the name means “son of TY”. Ty is a pet form of Mattias (gift of Jehovah) while “son” is a common patronymic suffix which is found as part of many English surnames of this type.
The Tyson Family
The first references which have been found to any individual member of the family is relative to one Gilbert Tison of Nottinghamshire, who was listed in the Doomsday Book in 1086. In 1092 Guillaume (William) Tyson is named in the Doomsday Book as being a counselor and advisor to King William I, known as William the Conqueror. The Doomsday Book listed all property owners in William’s newly conquered territory.
In 1130 there is an Adam Tisun entered in the pipe Rools of Yorkshire. According to the 8th Volume of the Westminster Records in 1346, during the reign of Edward III, one Philip Tyson was appointed by the King to aid in the formulating of important laws in regard to the estates and property in general held by the crown. Philip Tyson held many castles and estates in his own name.
Thus it was that Tyson’s though French in origin had become distinctly English during these two centuries. When in the 16th century and early part of the 17th century we find religious oppression prevalent in ENG, it is not strange to learn from the records in the banished for religious differences. These two along with other members of their family went to Holland where they could worship in freedom. Dutch influences soon had their effects upon them and they became known as Tiessens, the Dutch equivalent of their English name.
After the discovery of America and the consequential influx of immigrants into the New World, the Tyson name appears in the early records of Pennsylvania and Virginia.
A Reyneir Tyson came over from Holland about 1683 and his brother Cornelius Tyson followed him later, both settling at Germantown, Pennsylvania, near Philadelphia. It had long been believed the Tyson family of eastern N. C. had descended from the Pennsylvania branch, which has now been proved incorrect. The real problem finding the family is finding out who was the first immigrant ancestor of our NC branch of the Tyson’s.
To understand the records one must realize there are variations to the spelling of the name, such as Tison, Tyce, Tice and Tiesson, A William Tyson was transported into Maryland in 1668 as a servant and a Thomas Tyson was transported in 1674. One of the earliest Tyson’s in Virginia is found in Hotten’s Immigration Lists 1600 - 1700, published in England in 1880. One William Tyce, age 20m was aboard the ship Constant Clement, Campin, master outward bound for Virginia October 24, 1633. In Cavaliers and Pioneers, by Nugent are found to early Tyson’s in Isle of Wight, Virginia being George Tyson November 20, 1642 and Edward Tyson June 6, 1657.
