OVER RIVERS, THROUGH WOODSBen's StoryLast year he was diagnosed with bi-polar (manic depressive syndrome). I grieved for several days until I realized that this was something we could learn to manage and this, at last, was something we could work with. Our life has been filled with more therapy and behavior education and socialization. Ben's school has wanted to place him in a special education unit, which I have resisted because Ben needs to learn to get along with his peer group; he needs to be able to interact within his society. Ben continues to make progress; he is moving ahead but with some difficulty. The road ahead looks hard and long but the ending of Ben's story looks hopeful and clear where once was dismay and confusion. We are learning to manage his disability and through management, he will have a good, productive and long life. |
