The following letter was written to James Hill HALL from his cousin James E. HILL, who is stationed at "The Presideo" in San Francisco, California, awaiting embarkation for Manila in the Phillipines during the Spanish American War.

The Presideo, San Francisco, Cal. Nov. 29, 1899

Dear cousin James: I had a letter from my cousin, your daughter, and have time to write you a word, as I am very busy preparing for embarkation at 9 a.m. tomorrow on the Dalny Vastock (Russian for Eastern) en route for Manila, P.I. I was a major in the 9th Ill. Vol. & 5 mos. of any service was in Cuba-was mustered out last of May-appointed Captain 42d Inftry U.S. Vol. Aug 17, 1899. I did not have your address or I would have written you to come to see me. I very much desire that you write to me in Manila, as I wish to keep track of you and when I return, if ever,

Mother is still alive and well at last accounts.
